Sensei Jose Santaella has an immense amount of knowledge, passion, and care for teaching karate. I feel so comfortable as a beginner. I'm really glad I chose this dojo and I am inspired to continue because I'm having fun and working hard. At Japan Karate-Do Kogeki of Miami Shores FL we offer a range of martial arts classes for children of all ages, teens and adults with classes for beginners through experts.
Our dojo focuses on the traditional Japanese martial arts discipline of Shotokan Karate. Our teaching philosophy allows students to advance at their own pace. We offer optional competition programs that allow students at all levels to compete in tournaments locally, regionally and at a national level.

Services
Our Dojo name Kogeki comes from a Japanese word to attack or cut down and refers to offense and Bobi means defense. The term KoBoIchi or Kogeki means that offence and defense are one. During our visit there was a Karate sparring (kumite) exchange between the National Japan team and me against the National team of Iraq.
One clear example is Upper Body Shifting (Jo Taisabaki - Shown right) where the body is rotated in defense, and the same rotation drives the attacking punch. Jo Tai Sabaki is only one of many concepts used in the martial arts that collapses the distinction between Offence (Ko) and Defense (Bo).
Using this type of technique takes a thorough understanding of timing (Hyoshi) and distance (Ma-ai), especially the Initiative Before the Initiative (Sen No Sen), Against the Initiative (Tai No Sen) and One Inch Distance (I Sun no Ma-ai) and most obviously, mental states we discussed in the last chapter.

My daughter has been with Sensei Santaella and Miss Mary for about 3 years. They are very dedicated to the children! This is the real deal, not a Mickey mouse dojo trying to make some bucks from unsuspecting parents. Is so real, that they made my daughter the 2017 US national champion in kata! Go kogeki!

This karate place just opened up near my house. I immediately signed my 5 year old son up as they have an opening special: free reg fee & uniform.
Let me tell you, I LOVE this place. Sensei Jose is the teacher and he is amazing! He's tough on the kids, but in a loving way. In other words, he EXPECTS discipline of all his students in and out of the class. He expects them to work hard at their karate, have good hygiene (he checks their hands for dirtiness every class. Dirty hands? Drop and give me ten push-ups!) and do chores at home and school. Sensei doesn't mess around!
