Most workout programs are painfully boring, so we created an exciting and addictive experience that blends gaming + serious fitness to get you in the best shape of your life. In 2016 Preston and Ryan decided to start their new venture, Black Box VR, with a mission to disrupt the fitness industry once again by creating innovative products and experiences that create lasting change in people's lives.
An experience that redefines fitness at a fundamental level. Heroes field warrior units and perform movements with real resistance to deploy direct damage, break through opposing gates and destroy the enemy crystal. Stronger lifts correspond to more powerful attacks. A session is comprised of as many rounds as possible in 30 minutes.
Black Box VR's science-backed workout is a serious resistance training + HIIT cardio workout program. It gives you an intense full-body strength training workout in only 30 minutes! These full-body workouts should be done 3 - 4 times per week help you hit science-based exercise volume goals for fast results.
Traditional resistance training at a gym is a great idea! The problem is that almost nobody actually does it consistently over time. Even the most disciplined fitness athletes break their gym habit and struggle to maintain their physiques. We all know that the gyms are packed in January and empty by February.

Truthfully better than any other gym and very unique using VR for workouts and having machines that work with the VR headset. But truthfully if you have the space in your place you can buy your own VR headset and play different games for workouts like beat saber. But If you don't have the space and want to go to the gym for your workout I'll recommend here than any other gym.

Best workout experience ever! Private Booths are sanitized very thoroughly after each members visit. Staff is extremely helpful and friendly. They have a gaming app with incentives to earn points/rewards and calendar to schedule workouts. The VR set bases your weights on every individuals strength. You must try the demo to fully experience how amazing this place is!

I started my journey more than a year ago. What kinda of experience is this you ask? Whether you see it as a game or a fitness challenge I say is the best of both worlds. I've never been a gamer nor been consistent with my workouts until I started coming here (BBVR). For me it has the perfect balance between both, you get motivated playing the game and pushing yourself physically to be better. Let's not forget the community within, navigating through the game and your progress is easier because, there is always someone there to help you and pick you up when you're feeling like you're not good enough

The folks at Black Box VR hit a magical sweet spot for making workouts fun and engaging. I started back in April 2019 and have been going non-stop and clocked over a 100 sessions. Since then, I've lost about 40 lbs through a combination of good dieting and consistent exercise.
The hardest part about Black Box VR in my opinion is the onboarding experience. When you come in, they give you a 10 minute introductory video so you understand some of the gaming mechanics. I can see how it's a bit tricky for people who aren't using to virtual reality or gaming in general, but the staff

I don't usually workout, I don't even like playing video games, but I got so into this VR workout so much. It's so satisfying to do workout and win a game and it's definitely a great workout. The team there are so proactive, supportive and helpful and I usually have a great time talking to them. It's a little tough for women to get as high score as a guys, which is a little bummer but other than that, it's really enjoyable and great concept.

Black Box VR is the first place of it's kind in the world and it's pretty incredible at that. Should the game play be your only workout? Of course not, if you do the same thing over and over again (no matter what it is) you'll end up with an injury of some kind. Don't turn off your brain when you're playing, listen to your body.
I love this place. It's not perfect but it's an incredible way to get a solid workout in an entertaining way.

I've been looking for a way to get in better shape for a while now, but nothing was working because I couldn't maintain motivation. Exercise was such a chore, and the consequences for skipping it were minor.
With BlackBox, it's no longer a chore. It's a game. I now want to go in, because it's fun! My reps now fire lightening bolts or fireballs. Between sets, I summon awesome champions to fight for me. I'm making rapid, interesting strategic choices, while my blood is pumping from pushing my body to it's limits.
And you know all those dirty tricks you see in

I was excited to try this new concept out and thought I would maybe just get a semi-decent workout because your hooked to the VR. Man was I wrong. I was so exhausted by the end of it I wasn't sure i could walk home! I can't wait to try this out again. I'm not a big gamer but I'm super competitive and didn't want to loose during the game which made me push extra hard. I could sit here and try to describe everything but it really is just something you need to experience.

SO FUN!! As a gamer, this was my dream workout. I actually had this place pique my interest as I biked quickly across market street and saw the words "VR workout" pass by. Does it work? Yes it does.
You come in and can have a free into trial. They have a 10 minute intro video and then you get let into your booth.
The workout itself is a combo of strength row, squat, and chest press (you unlock more later) and it's good that they encourage you to do more reps by adding multipliers on the damage you deal! The game is a tower defense PvP game where you play a CPU! They also encourage

As I walked away, homeless dude up the block was like "he look like he play football!"
And that was after just 1 session.
Thank you Black Box.
Jk let's break it down...
STUDIO & AMENITIES
So fresh n so clean clean, like other bootyque gyms. 2(?) of the bathrooms have showers, which I guess are also the changing areas bc the small locker nookie is open & coed (that's what she said). Mats, foam rollers, and 3ish stationary bikes to stretch & warm up. Cubbies in the workout rooms. Free preworkout & postprotein; I think this is literally the only gym that hooks

Edit: been going for two weeks, every day. Still enjoying it. It gets really hard so it becomes a challenge!
Just tried my first session in SF this morning! I'm not really a skeptic so I have nothing bad to say. My friend who recommended me also worried about other people's sweat etc but it didn't really bother me - that's a minor detail.
The overall experience was incredible. I didnt even realize I was working out. I'm actually in great shape and have many other ways to stay in shape so I didn't see myself needing any gym membership but this was genuinely really

I walked by this on Market Street and was super curious, so I signed up for a month trial (free) and here are my impressions after going a dozen or so times across a few weeks. Typically, I do a lot of bootcamps, yoga, and cycling, so this was definitely a new experience for me.
To get started: you download an app to your smartphone, which tells you all sorts of stats about your workout. (How much weight you're lifting, what level your characters are, etc.) You also schedule your 30-minute workout sessions in the app. (All workouts are 30 minutes.)

Okay, this is sick!
if you find the demo exercise too easy, hang in there for one more- it doesn't seem to start calibrating or ramping up in difficulty until the second exercise.
for those used to weightlifting, this is closer to complexes than a strength training routine: rapid cycling between squats, stiff-legged deadlifts, rows, chest press, lat pulldowns, and overhead press. the resistance starts going up depending on your performance, with cooldowns between "battles".
this would be a great supplement to a strength training routine, or a supplement to running or biking if

Fun concept but not meant for beginners. I couldn't get through the chest press tutorial because it was too heavy but the front desk ladies said they couldn't longer the weight and had even offered to do it for me. By the time I managed to get through, my 30 min was up. Very frustrating. Clearly not meant for beginners.

Are you looking for a way to gamify your strength training? I just took my first session at Black Box VR, and holy crap. It was so much fun. I have never used VR before, but I'm a believer.
I was particularly impressed by:
- how accurately the game translated my physical motion into game actions
- the game automatically calibrates to your level while you play and you can tell how the calibration is happening in the span of one game
- free shower & towel service
- the first month is free if you take your first session within the next three weeks
- how my mind really had to focus on strategy

Cute concept, I guess it's worth it if it gets you to exercise?
It's basically a cable machine with a video game, where the game "makes" you do rows and squats. There's a mechanism in the game that gets you to switch after you do 10-20 reps in a way that turns it into circuit training.
If you want to get in shape, for the price ($200/mo), I don't know why you'd choose this place over something like Open Gym SF (just down the street), which has great coaches who will make sure you have good form (the game only "knows" where your wrists are, so it can
