The earliest mentions of fire protection for the area are found in journals kept by local residents. One such resident was concerned that "the nearest fire station was located in Escondido, twelve miles to the east over a bad road." An entry made in 1922 spoke of a station open only seasonally by the California Division of Forestry (CDF).
