Tim grew up working on and building houses with his uncle and Father. He graduated from Sutherlin High School, and then joined the Navy. There he served 11 years while being assigned to; the Navy's Presidential Guard, stationed at the Pentagon, deployed twice on the USS Ingraham to the Persian Gulf, and then finally at a repair depot for Gas Turbine
