Thomson's history is closely tied to the Georgia Railroad. The city was named after the famous John Edgar Thomson, chief engineer of the Georgia Railroad system. Also, Thomson was well-known for completing the 173 mile long railroad from Augusta to Marthasville (present day Atlanta, Georgia) in 1845.
