Shotokan Karate of America (SKA) is a nonprofit organization teaching traditional karate-do in the United States since 1956 (most Americans had never even heard of karate in 1956). Because of SKA's strong resolve to offer high-quality martial. Karate practice strengthens the mind, develops composure, a clearer thought process, deeper insight into one's mental capabilities, and more self-confidence.
It strengthens the entire body, improves coordination, quickens reflexes, builds stamina and overall health. Locate the SKA dojo (school) nearest you to observe a practice. Each dojo determines its own affordable practice fee, depending on location and expenses. In SKA there are no contracts to commit to, so beginners are able to explore karate training without pressure.

In the contemporary period, from around 1900 to the present time, Master Funakoshi Gichin was the most important influence in the development of Karate as we know it today. At the age of 11 years, he began to study Karate and was a devout student of the two greatest masters of all time: Yasutsune (Anko) Itosu and Yasutsune (Anko) Azato.
Tsutomu Ohshima is the founder of Shotokan Karate of America (SKA). Mr. Ohshima's branch of the Shotokan world has become known as Shotokan Ohshima Karate-do. Practicing daily, he pursued sumo wrestling from the age of five until he was fifteen; kendo (Japanese sword fighting) from the ages of eight to fifteen, and judo from the ages of nine to thirteen.
Why should somebody want to start karate training? There are many reasons, including staying physically and mentally fit, learning how to defend oneself, and pursuing the deeper meaning of Karate-Do. Regardless of your age, sex, or current physical condition, you can begin karate practice and enjoy it.

I have been practicing with SKA since 2008. The non-profit ideology, countless high quality selfless black belt teachers, emphasis on being humble, emphasis on discipline, facing our selves with the strictest eyes and many other key life lessons were all thing I learned just because I got to join this wonderful organization. I now have 100s if not 1000s of close friends who all push themselves to be better than yesterday because of our common connection through SKA Dojo's. I have seen kids who started practicing with Ska early on, who grew up to be fantastic human beings. Ohshima sensei gave SKA

SKA is an excellent organization. The karate teachings of Ohshima Sensei inspire and motivate one to be a "better human being." I've practiced SKA karate for almost 10 years now and I'm still learning. This has become part of my life. This organization changed the way I think and act. Give it a try, and stay awhile until you can find something about yourself.
