Aikido was founded by Morihei Ueshiba (1883-1969). Morihei Ueshiba is universally referred to as O'Sensei which means "Great Teacher." O'Sensei spent a lifetime studying many different types of Japanese budo or martial arts where he developed a great deal of expertise, but he was also a deeply religious man as well.
Fundamentals class aims to provide students with the core skills needed to build a strong foundation. The class is generally at a slower pace so that students can concentrate on building strong basic or kihon-waza fundamental Aikido skills which is the surest path to gain technical proficiency. There is no forward ukemi or rolling techniques in this class.
Aikido is not taught as a competitive sport but rather as a martial art which cultivates the latent power of the mind and the body. In addition to learning the martial art of Aikido, children naturally become more agile, stronger and flexible in our program. Children are taught the principles of respect, self-discipline, and caring, all in a very fun, but disciplined atmosphere.
Saki yakitachi o nukeba, masu masu masurao no kokoro wo togu bekari keri "Before you draw the tempered blade, first temper and purify your own soul." Simply put, Iaido is to simply draw and cut with a sword and return the sword to the scabbard. This simple action must be brought to the highest level of excellence where the opponent cannot resist it, cannot avoid it, and is helpless against it.
The Aikido Center of Los Angeles has been granted Konin or "official recognition" by the Aikikai Foundation - Aikido World Headquarters located in Japan. In Japan, prior to the Tokugawa era (1603-1868), budo arts were martial systems only taught within families or clans. Students were training primarily for the battlefield.

ACLA is a wonderful place to learn aikido. The instructors are knowledgeable and patient, the facility is in great shape, and the classes are a terrific value. I've learned so much at ACLA, and I encourage anyone who's thinking of attending to visit and observe a class, then introduce yourselves to some of the students and/or instructors afterwards.

I absolutely treasure my experience at this dojo. It is THE dojo to be at if you want to do Aikido in Los Angeles. Sensei Ito is amazing, other teachers are also wonderful, the community is extraordinary and the dojo itself is beautiful, clean and traditional. As a new student to martial arts and Aikido, I felt very welcomed and cared for as I started to learn the practice. As I began improving, I felt challenged the right amount to practice with eagerness and getting out of my head. Aikido practice has been an amazing workout for my body, mind and spirit. I always leave energized and feeling great

The Aikido Center of Los Angeles has adapted to the setbacks of the pandemic by offering non-contact form, technique, and sword training. Practicing Aikido not only provided me with combat and self-defense moves, but has helped me overcome the challenges of everyday life as well. I learned to persevere, be resilient, and continue training in my daily life.

The thing that impressed me when I first observed a class at ACLA was the focus of the students and teacher. Everyone moved with a purpose. Everything seemed to have an order and routine. Furuya Sensei's aikido was fluid and graceful and powerful. I had a feeling that this was the right place for me. I signed up that day, and 18 years later I'm still training at ACLA.
If you're interested in aikido then I highly recommend observing a class here.

This dojo is dedicated to keeping traditional Aikido teachings alive and well. I have learned much more than just Aikido techniques as I didn't expect to learn so many life lessons through my training here. I spent many years thinking I knew what Aikido was before ever stepping foot in a dojo. There is no replacement for stepping on the mat on a consistent basis and I couldn't ask for a better place to train.

A dojo dedicated to teaching the art in an authentic way and preserving the vision of the dojo's original founder. The instructors have been doing a very high level of aikido for a long time and put a great deal of effort into not just teaching correct technique, but teaching you how to learn the art.

Finding a dojo to practice martial arts is easy. Finding a unique, traditional and first class dojo that teaches to the very highest standard is nearly impossible. But that is exactly what you will find at the Aikido Center of Los Angeles.
If you want an easy time and quick black belt then look elsewhere. But if you truly want to become an exceptional martial artist, in both body and spirit, then your commitment and dedication will be highly rewarded at ACLA.
