The IJJ studio is a partnership between Professor Ricardo Wilke (Black Belt, 4th - degree) and practitioner Benjamin Willis (Black Belt). Formerly the LA Jiu-Jitsu Academy, their new joint venture as Independent Jiu-Jitsu seeks to deepen the community that Professor Wilke has built by introducing Willis' business background and strong network as a co-founder of the management company Indie-Pop.
Independent Jiu Jitsu's mission is simple. We teach the art of Jiu-Jitsu to anyone who wants to learn, with the overarching goal of improving physical health and mental wellness. In Western culture, in particular, the balance between our physical and spiritual selves has been shattered.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) teaches us that by adequately applying a combination of leverage & timing, a weaker person can successfully defend oneself against a stronger opponent. By then implementing joint-locks and chokeholds, one can defeat an opponent. BJJ is also physical Chess - both the mind and body work in synchronicity to assess, problem-solve, and execute an action to advance one's position.
This class covers Jiu-Jitsu fundamentals. Whether you are new to Jiu-Jitsu or getting back into the art, this class provides a safe training environment that focuses on technique drilling to build a strong base for the rest of your Jiu-Jitsu development. The Mixed Level Jiu-Jitsu class welcomes all belt levels.

LA Jiu Jitsu Academy is a fantastic place to train. Ricardo is a terrific instructor who instantaneously recognized my strong suits and areas I need to improve upon and pushed me to face my weaknesses with a cerebral and constructive approach. The students and staff are all friendly, welcoming and provide a familial atmosphere to guests and new… students without the "tough guy" attitude that can unfortunately be associated to so many BJJ gyms. If you are a newcomer or a seasoned practitioner, this place is ideal to learn the art or expand your skill set, whether you want to get in shape
