The word Aikido is usually translated as "The Way of Harmony." It is difficult to define Aikido precisely because its meaning lies in the actual experience of the art. As one trains, the meaning becomes clear and deepens. The following description from The Shambala Guide to Aikido by John Stevens provides a basic glimpse of three dimensions of Aikido: The principles of Aikido need to be experienced through actual practice.
No prior experience necessary. Easy to moderate pace. Focus is on basic stance and movements (kihon dosa), safe falls and rolls (ukemi); and selected Aikido techniques. Students begin to develop an awareness of the principles of balance and centeredness that are the essence of Aikido. Introductory course fee is $60 for 10 lessons.
Kid's Class sessions run throughout the year and new students ages 7 to 11 years are welcome to join at any time. To provide children a program for personal growth, developing understanding, and building positive relationships by exploring and enhancing their physical and creative gifts and abilities through Yoshinkai Aikido.
AIKI-PROTECT is a specialized division of the Shuharikan Dojo created to present a comprehensive curriculum of self-defense and self-protection study and training. Recognizing that traditional martial arts instruction is not the same as effective self-defense instruction, AIKI-PROTECT is designed to train students in all aspects of self-protection: legal, philosophical, mental, emotional, and physical.

Our son has been going to the Saturday morning classes to this dojo for about a year now. Great experience. Outstanding sensei-gata, they work great with kids.

I love love love this aikido dojo. I'm a complete noob to all physical activity but wanted to try a martial art after watching Avatar: The Last Airbender. I chose Shuharikan because their approach to beginners is very open and fun. No "Bow to your sensei!" militaristic vibe here! Everyone is friendly and engaged in learning. No senseless drills, no hostility or anything that would turn off a beginner. They even have a low-impact aikido class on Thursdays. Great community and great people.
