Most dojos fall under one of two categories: fight clubs or day care. The School of Martial Arts West LA is different. We offer a third choice: Real Martial Arts, taught well. Our teaching style strikes a balance between tradition and a modern, scientific approach to self defense. Getting in great shape?
That's just a bonus. Our martial classes combine intense total-body workouts with cutting edge self defense. Students work in collaboration, practicing real-life hand to hand combat to instill greater confidence and mindfulness in all aspects of life.

The School of Martial Arts in West LA is a training center for the body and mind. Accessible to all ages and skill levels, our teachings focus on self defense and mindfulness through meditation. If you are trying to get in better shape, learn how to protect yourself or enhance your spirituality, our dojo will help you grow in all areas.
We care deeply about the development and growth of all of our students. Here, we practice as partners, not opponents. The whole dojo learns and sweats together. Our adult martial arts class offers philosophies and self defense tactics that can be applied throughout one's life. What makes the School of Martial Arts West LA stand out from other fitness and martial arts disciplines is its breadth of philosophy in both physical and mental wellness.
Real martial arts aren't just a force to be used on the streets. They can also be a force for good. At the School of Martial Arts West LA, we embrace community service and routinely host events which encourage wellness such as free self defense classes, group meditation sessions and free classes at the beach.
Jr Wushu is a high energy class for our students ages 5 to 8, that incorporates punches, kicks, throws and grappling with long lasting life lessons in concentration, discipline and confidence. Our Wushu program for kids ages 9 and up teaches confidence and discipline through self-defense drills that incorporate punches, kicks, grappling, throws and flying kicks.
Our Tai Chi class is a slow-moving meditation that encourages full body movement to increase flexibility and balance. Practice brings you back to the breath and keeps you grounded in the moment, which strengthens you in mind and body. Students work one-on-one with Sifu Scott or senior students in each class.

A fantastic school with fantastic students and staff. If you live in the L.A. area, any amount of traffic is worth it to arrive to Sifu Ryan Scott's dojo. His martial arts will change your life and I have trained for years with some of the senior students there! Very good man and teaches incredible techniques not only for your body but your life.

The true value of a martial arts practice is how much you love it, whether it compels you to come back each day, and the ways it transforms all areas of your life.
I get this, and more: From practicing strikes in Kihon, learning a new weapons form, helping a new student discover the physics of self defense, escaping a submission in grappling, re-charging my energy in Tai Chi, participating in kids class, and meditating.
I see this from the students that come to class, who leave glowing (partly from sweat), and eyes shining. I see it in kids class, when they try extra hard, and invite their friends

If you want to find out who you are at your best--most compassionate, driven, calm (no, these are not in conflict), intentional, encouraging, open to pushing yourself through new challenges among partners with the same mindset--whether an experienced martial artist or a complete novice (or just looking for a super fun way to maintain or work toward physical fitness), Find.Your.Way.Here.
You won’t regret it.
Excellent teaching (all classes taught by the owner, Sifu Scott), so, not surprisingly, wonderfully caring students who make being an amazing partner a priority. Beautiful dojo in a great

I've visited many martial arts schools but this one is very special. Thanks to the instructor, Sifu Scott, the atmosphere is so inviting. This place is always alive when classes are in progress. The members are so kind and friendly to each other, respecting the awesome etiquette of the school. There isn't a person i dislike in this dojo. I feel safe there, at home and at peace. Free to learn a wonderful martial art that takes it's roots in Kung Fu, Jiu Jitsu, Aikido, Tai Chi and self defense. Sifu Scott's master, Sifu Brown, Has black belts in several martial arts and over 40 years of practice

Fitness, meditation, tradition, discipline, self-awareness, fun and so much more! The most well rounded martial arts experience I've ever had! This is my one stop shop for Kungfu, Tai Chi and Self-defense. I always feel welcome and taken care of here. Sifu Scott is such an awesome, caring, and talented instructor! Best dojo in town, period!

3 years ago, my son, who was 6 at the time said he wanted to do karate. Not really knowing anything about martial arts, I set up visits to 5 different martial arts schools in the area. After our first trial, my daughter, 9 at the time, decided she wanted to do the classes too. After all the trials, we settled on the School of Martial Arts, which actually teaches Kung Fu.
What impressed me was the owner, Sifu Scott, who teaches all the classes, and his approach. He's fantastic with the kids, really understanding the ups and downs of practice. The approach is a well balanced development of discipline

I've never felt as welcomed in a dojo than when I stepped (bare)foot into the School of Martial Arts. Sifu Scott has a great passion for his craft and instills this love for the martial arts in his students, regardless of their age or skill level. Sifu Scott is the best teacher I have had (both inside and outside of academia) and truly thrives on his students' success. 10/10 Would recommend.
