Services
Main Street Small Animal Hospital opened in 1988, when Dan Blake moved to the area to practice viticulture and veterinary medicine. He purchased an old house at the end of main street and began converting it into a veterinary hospital. Back then, Templeton had about 500 residents and there wasn't much happening on Main Street beyond Hewitt's Hardware and the Feed and Grain store.
When your dog or cat is sick it can be a stressful time. Our team works with you to get you and your pet in to see one of our veterinarians as soon as possible, even if it means working through lunch, staying late, or meeting you after hours. Our priority is your pet's well being! Sometimes, a diagnosis can be made with a thorough physical exam and a good history from the owner.
Our team makes it a priority to stay educated on the best approaches to small animal anesthesia. We build a plan unique for each patient so your pet can have the smoothest and safest anesthesia possible. For example, our anesthesia protocol for a 6-month-old cat spay is different than our protocol for a 15-year-old Chihuahua dental.
We realize it can be stressful when deciding for your pet to undergo surgery. We carefully consider the benefit versus risk of every surgery for every patient. We practice good case selection so we can have the best surgical outcomes. We take our time to fully discuss the case with you and make sure we are all on the same page prior to considering any surgical procedure.
We believe in the importance of your pet's oral health. Overall, 70% of small animals seen in US veterinary hospitals have some degree of gingivitis or periodontal disease. When not addressed, these problems lead to tooth loss and stress on other organ systems. We offer professional advice on diets, treats, and home care that can prevent the development of dental disease in your pets.

Forget five stars, it should be Ten stars to Dr Ehlinger and all of the staff!
We have been coming to Main Street Animal Care since 2015 and still use Dr Ehlinger even though we've moved 6 hours away. Our dogs were rescues and lets just say they didn't come with 5 star personalities(they do not like people). Dr Ehlinger right away won our dogs hearts and they immediately accepted & trusted him. The staff and Dr Ehlinger have always been so loving and kind to our dogs as well as given them the very best care. As a vet Dr Ehlinger is awesome and he takes the time to give great veterinarian care

We anguished over the decision to put down our dog whom we had for over 8 years. The vet told us over the phone our options and that he would support our decision either way. On the day we took our dog in, the vet made a really insensitive comment indicating he thought we had made the “wrong” decision. It was definitely not something we needed on top of how devastated we already were. If we ever choose to adopt another dog, we will not be returning to this vet.

If your pup is not a fan of being alone with a vet, DO NOT send them here. Otherwise your animal and you will have to fight off being labeled in records as “extremely aggressive” over growling and this will deter other vets from accepting your animal in the future over fear. Even though he received all of his shots here with a couple visits with no harm to anyone. They also wanted us to neuter our large breed dog at 4 months old, and when we decided not to because of wanting healthy growth, they left us a lengthy message about their “fear” for our dog and the “dangerous road” we are

Last summer during the height of the pandemic, our adopted senior (12 year old) dog was diagnosed with terminal cancer. We had only had him for a year and knew he had had a previous bout with cancer but had been abandoned and was considered cured but probably not going to be adoptable. We wanted to give him a loving home for his remaining years. He brought us so much joy and love. All the staff at Main Street were so compassionate and caring. They provided us with a shady secluded area in their side yard where we could spend his last moments with him and he peacefully drifted to doggie heaven in

Suspect my dog should be participating in this review as well, but he is terrible on these minuscule keyboards! The whole team there was professional and treated Rocky as one of their own - can't comment on their surgery skills, as we were only visiting for vaccines and a quick health check-up. Nevertheless, will definitely revisit (hopefully, not too soon!).
