Iwama-Style Aikido and Aikido Weapons Taught by Instructors with 25+ Years of Experience Studying and Teaching Iwama-Ryu Aikido. We Study and Teach Aikido as a Martial Art. Aikido, a traditional Japanese martial art, was developed by Morihei Ueshiba (1883-1969) in the first half of the 20th century.
The Aikido technical repertoire, derived in large part from Daito-Ryu Aiki-Jujutsu, largely uses joint locks, pins, and throws in response to an attack. While Aikido includes the use of strikes, or atemi, this isn't the primary focus. Aikido techniques focus on controlling an opponent by taking his or her balance, followed by either immobilization or a throw.

O-Sensei studied a number of martial arts, during his early adulthood. He served in the Japanese Army during the Russo-Japanese War, and after being discharged in 1907, he met Sokaku Takeda, the founder of Daito-Ryu Aiki-Jujutsu. Ueshiba Sensei practiced Daito-Ryu for almost 20 years, earning a "kaishaku sodensho", the highest rank awarded in Daito-Ryu, at the time.
Our dojo's mission is to foster the development of a vibrant, sustainable and robust Aikido community within both the Colorado Springs region and the greater state of Colorado. The focus of our curriculum is on Traditional, or Iwama Style, Aikido. We study and teach Aikido as a martial art. We believe that the benefits of Aikido are derived through consistent and spirited practice.
The following are answers to Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) about both Aikido and our Dojo. Aikido is an effective martial art with some distinct differences from some other martial arts. The biggest difference is that Aikido provides a range of responses to an attack, allowing the advanced Aikido student more options to tailor his/her response based on ethical considerations.

I recently joined TACOS after a 20 year absence from training. Sensei John Wiley and his wife Elizabeth opened in May 2018 and I was student 000001. I have trained in marital arts since I was 17, from Karate to Aikido and I can say without reservation this is the best school, environment, training I have had, bar none. The classes are traditional, formal and fun; diverse from Kata to weapons to basics, historically sensitive to tradition and paced for anyone to progress...newbie to trained aikidoist. Sensei illustrates and explains in simple terms every move or action and then relates it to everyday
