The Sweet Onion
Nestled in the heart of beautiful Downtown Waynesville, The Sweet Onion Restaurant offers regional cuisine with contemporary flair. From our traditional favorites like southern fried chicken to our signature pastas, fresh mountain trout and scrumptious house-made desserts, we offer something for everyone in the family.

Please call the restaurant between 11:30 and 8:00 to make a reservation, or make one in person. Our own take on the classic French onion soup - just creamier, topped with a crouton and Swiss cheese bubbling hot. Lemongrass grilled chicken, served with Romaine, cucumber, carrots, crispy wontons and Thai peanut dressing.

Great food! I highly recommend getting the French Onion soup! Also their drinks are great as well. We sat at the bar for our meal because it was sooo busy. Make sure you get reservations or come early.

They saved the evening for us. We found a spot at the bar and we're quickly greeted by Saige with a great energy in her nun costume.

8/7/2021: I had the chicken salad sandwich with sweet potato fries. Hubby had the country fried steak with gravy, garlic mashed potatoes and cole slaw. All of the food was outstanding. Portions were generous. Our server (also the bartender) was very friendly and very knowledgeable. We would definitely eat here again.

The service was decent, and everyone was friendly. However, the food was "meh" at best. It all looked great. But, we ordered catfish with fried okra, and our meal came to the table with the fish on top of the okra.
So, the okra tasted really fishy and was very very soggy. Not the best, but not horrible! However, the shrimp pasta was pretty good!

Where do you start when you have had catfish in from Texas to South Carolina and elsewhere and tell you the breading takes nothing away from catfish that flakes like a cod.
I love French onion soup and their sweet onion soup is a must have.

Friends and I came for the french onion soup we'd heard so much about. The semi-creamy soup was delicious! We also shared the crispy fried onion and ahi tuna sashimi appetizers and the pecan crusted trout. I especially enjoyes the light, crisp flavor of the finger beer. All were fabulous and our server, Nicole, was amazing! We loved visiting Waynesville!

We called for a Saturday lunch and luckily were able to sit before the time quoted. The onion soup was good- I wasn’t a huge fan of the creaminess- I’m a stickler for the standard French Onion I guess. The cheese on top was prefect amount and consistency.
The salad was good and I liked the candied pecans- the lemongrass vinaigrette was amazing. A bit small of a salad for price but flavorful. I added a crab cake and it was delicious.
You can see into kitchen and understand it may be hard to wear a mask back there. I only saw one person in kitchen (out of 4 men) wearing correctly and consistently
