The history of funeral service in Holland goes back to 1865 when John Alberti had a livery and undertaking business located on East Ninth Street. In 1899, John Dykstra bought the undertaking business from Mr. Alberti and moved into the building next to the livery where he started Dykstra Funeral Home.
It was there that John, his wife Josephine, and two daughters, Anna Marie and Ethel started the business. In 1906, John was faced with a decision. George Azling, owner of the funeral home in Saugatuck, had a sudden heart attack and passed away while conducting a funeral. Not looking to expand, John felt compassion for Mrs. Azling, offering to buy the business, keeping Mrs. Azling as the caretaker and her family intact.

Abraham Lincoln said, "I do the very best I know how, the very best I can, and I mean to keep on doing so until the end." As a fourth-generation funeral director, Craig learned from an early age to work hard and to take care of the families you serve. His father, Victor Kleinheksel, worked into his 80's and his grandfather, Julius, came in to work every day well into his 90's.
Our staff is experienced in helping families make the necessary arrangements regardless of where the death has occurred. We will handle all the arrangements properly. Due to the costs involved in other areas, the most efficient way for you, will be to call us first to handle everything.
When death occurs, the family should contact our funeral home before arranging any type of final disposition services, particularly if you wish to transfer the deceased back to the Holland area.If a person dies while traveling outside the United States, you will need to notify the U.S. Embassy in the country where the death occurred (though officials in the foreign country may notify the embassy for you).

Today was funeral day for the love of my life. Now I understand the pain of losing a soul-mate. But those handling all the many affairs surrounding this difficult moment were kind and caring when it mattered most. Orlando, you are a gem. And Phil, you went the extra mile to be cordial and accommodating. You guys do this for a living, yet somehow give the sense of entering into the experience yourselves. How we all appreciated that. When it hurts, you truly need people in your corner, and you were that to us.

My experience with Dykstra Funeral Home has been stellar. Orlando and Tom couldn't have been more professional and respectful when they came to our house to collect my husband. Craig was always available either by phone or via email, to answer any and all of my questions. And his demeanor, kindness and expertise made me feel at ease right away. Thank you all for making a tragic event bearable and even pleasant. You have my continued gratitude and full endorsement. Thank you again.
