These days the term "martial arts" has been watered down to the extent that people think of it as just a fighting system, "self defense, " or even worse, MMA or cage fighting. The current perception of martial arts is so mired in fallacies and misunderstandings that people do not know the power and the depth of what it once was, and still is, if you have the eyes to see and the will to seek it out.

Cody Lewallen has been a student of martial arts for well over 20 years, more than half of that time in Japan. As a teenager he studied many styles including Kenpo, Ninjutsu, Jujutsu, Hwa Rang Do, Karate, Iaido and Kenjutsu. He researched extensively trying to find a martial art that was personally fulfilling.
Shoubu Dojo is in many ways Tucson's best kept secret. Having studied in martial arts myself for over 13 years, I was critical about the potential for learning traditional martial arts effectively here in the United States.
Thanks to his fluency in both Japanese and Aikido, Cody Lewallen Sensei has not only an understanding of the art for himself as a skilled practitioner, but has the ability to communicate the art's meaning eloquently, pragmatically, and concisely-a truly unique trait in a teacher these days.

As a traditional Japanese Aikido school, we make the important distinction between a school and a business. We are not here to sell memberships, hand out black belts, or sign up customers. It is our duty and obligation to pass learning down from hundreds of years of tradition.
If you were to join a University for example, the first thing on your mind would be your desired education and whether that institution has the qualified professors, the resources, and the ability to get you where you want to be.Asking the tuition price before doing your research on the University is a bit like putting the cart before the horse.

In this special Knife Fighting class students learn how to use a knife as a weapon to defend themselves. The best way to learn how to defend yourself from a knife attack is to know how to use a knife. This class gives insight into how your opponent will attack and how to best defend yourself by blending ancient technique, old world wisdom, and contemporary thought in a knife fighting system that works in modern society.

Best Aikido in Tucson hands down! Lewallen Sensei is hands down the best instructor/mentor that I have had the honor of learning from. A true master of the style of Aikido. Lewallen Sensei brings a very authentic Japanese experience to the table with an emphasis on modern defense in today’s times. I would highly recommend anyone to come by the dojo and give it a shot.

I highly recommend the Aikido Shoubu Dojo, I did a free Knife Fighting class and was hooked, I have no Martial Arts background but the instructor and fellow students are all so helpful I felt at home in just a few classes. The facility is spotless and well maintained, and they go out of their way to make women feel comfortable. Lewallen Sensei is an amazing master of this art and a very down to earth teacher. Give it a try, you will be met by smiling faces and a positive atmosphere.

I have been looking for place to practice martial arts in town for a long time. I am so glad I decided to observe a class for myself. I was impressed with how respectful and kind all of the students were and how clean the environment was. The teacher is very nice and was willing to take the time to answer the many questions I had. If you haven't seen this style of Aikido before it is definitely worth observing a class. It's seems to blend beauty and grace with efficiency and effectiveness for an impressive result. Be sure to check out the free women's self defense class on the first

Man, what a great place. I've been looking for a traditional dojo to train and I found this gem right on Speedway. Looks like they just opened. I meet with the teacher and he told me he lived in Japan for over a decade. He studies with many masters in his travels. He studied in the same Dojo as the one that Steven Seagal trained in. No wonder his technique looks just like the moves you seen in Seagal movies. He also speaks fluent Japanese. I've been training there since they opened and I have to say it's the best dojo I've ever trained in, and I've been trying all over
