Jodo is the Japanese martial art of the short staff. It focuses on striking and blocking against an attacker with a sword. The Kosho School of Karate is one of only a few schools in the United States with a qualified and certified Jo-Do instructor. Our Jo-Do instructor, Nate England, lived in Japan for 3 years studying this art.
Students begin their training by using a wooden sword (bokken), then a practice sword with a dulled blade (iaito), before graduating to a sharp edged sword (katana or tachi). Because Iaido is practiced with a weapon, the training is focused on the performance of solitary forms, or kata performed against imaginary opponents.
Karate is the ultimate system of unarmed self defense. Karate specializes in strikes such as punching, kicking, chopping, clawing, and gouging techniques. Karate also includes locking, choking, pinning, and throwing techniques which are used in cases where grappling with an opponent is more practical than striking.
For people new to the martial arts this will consist of an explanation about the customs and history of karate, an orientation to our school and how we teach, as well as learning some fundamental techniques and self-defenses. This course will give you a good idea if martial arts is something you would like to pursue, and if so you will be able to smoothly transition into regular classes.

Kosho is an excellent dojo! My sixteen year old is almost a purple belt there and has trained there for a few years. He has gained so much from all of the amazing instructors and his strength, coordination and confidence have increase dramatically from his instruction at Kosho. The very experienced instructors are top notch, precise, dedicated, motivating and positive. This place is the real deal and I'm forever grateful that I found this outstanding dojo for my son.

I've recently started training at Kosho with absolutely no previous experience in karate or martial arts. It has been a fantastic experience. The instructors are patient, knowledgeable, and dedicated to proper instruction of form and and execution of Shuri Ryu Karate. My experience has helped improve my confidence, focus, and overall physical health. I'm so glad I found this school. Check it out for yourself!

My son has been training with the Kosho School of Karate for almost 2 years. My family and I can not say enough good and positive things for not only the style, the teachings and the teachers, but for the entire environment. My son has been growing in amazing speed in the karate! But also emotionally and mentally by learning respect and honor! Thank you Kosho School of Karate!

My 14 year old daughter has been learning Karate, Jo and Iaido at Kosho for a year now. Her instructors are very, knowledgeable, professional, caring and actively interested in what she does outside of the dojo as well. We have been impressed with all of her instructors. I would recommend the dojo to any young female looking to learn more about martial arts. My daughter has a new confidence, respect and focus from her time at Kosho. It is a must see and try!
