Philadelphia JiuJitsu
Proudly serving The Philadelphia Martial Arts Community Since 1990. We are Philadelphia's oldest and continually operated Mixed Martial Arts Dojo. We at Philadelphia JiuJitsu have always been a non-affiliated Mixed Martial Arts club. Unlike other clubs you'll find in Philadelphia, Philadelphia JiuJitsu does not make you sign any contracts, attach your bank account, or make you pay a year in advance.

We also do not make you pay for any rank testing or merchandise. For this reason, we are able to provide the most reasonable training rates in the Philadelphia area without sacrificing any quality.
Services
Although we are open to the public, we only accept new students after an appointment and the screening process has been made. We do this to ensure a spacious, safe, professional training environment and to focus on individual attention for our members. These things make Philadelphia JiuJitsu perhaps one of Philadelphia's best-kept secrets.

I been coming to Philadelphia Jiu Jitsu for about 3 years and for the past 3 years it has been nothing but great and exciting! Damon and the other instructors know their stuff by heart and have a large range of knowledge of the sport alongside other types of mix martial arts that you learn a lot from various forms and styles. The school is very clean and organize with a large mat so their is plenty of space for everyone to drill moves and wrestle during class hours! Highly recommend!!

I’m going on my 4th month of training and I couldn’t be anymore pleased with my experience here. Coming in, everyone has been beyond welcoming and the small class sizes has helped me so much by allowing instructors to keep a close eye on everyone while training. Damon puts 200% of his effort into all of his students and pushes everyone to be better and reach their goals. I don’t think you can get this much value for your money at any other school.

My boyfriend and I started at Philadelphia Jiu Jitsu 6 months ago. I had never done martial arts before, or really any sport, so I was very nervous about starting something for the first time. I must say I am very happy I chose this place. Damon and the other instructors are extremely knowledgable and encourage questions at every class, and no question is too simple or too ridiculous. I like how at the jiu jitsu classes, Damon will often base what we cover that day almost completely off the questions, so the students help decide what we learn.
The other members are very welcoming and encouraging

It has been 2 months now since I started attending Damon's MMA classes. In the begining, my focus was learning jiu jitsu but I am happy that I get to learn some self defense, judo and other martial arts like Muay Thai. Classes are made in an intuitive, collobarative environment, and each class ends with small wrestling sessions in which you get a chance to apply the techniques you learn in these classes, and the best thing is Damon really cares about your safety during those classes. So I am pretty sure he is not going to let you get yourself injured if you do not do something crazy. Also you don

I have been training Mixed Martial Arts for 3 years and have visited and trained in many Academies. Philadelphia Jiu Jitsu is an amazing Mixed Martial Arts school located on Cherry Street in Philadelphia. I attended a class this past week and was extremely impressed with Damon and how he runs his academy. It is obvious that Damon loves teaching his students and has a great deal of knowledge. He is very conscious of making safety a priority and monitors all students through the entire class looking at students technique and assuring safety is given from both partners during drills. He pairs up students

I first met Damon in 2009 during a BJJ/Judo seminar. He's got a great way of relaying concepts in an easy to understand manner and pick out small details no matter the level of student. I then traveled to Philly to train with Damon over a weekend and did some stick, knife and grappling with him and several of his students - a great experience. I attended another two seminars - one in the gi and one out of the gi as well as a private lesson. Great experiences all around. If you're lucky enough to share a meal or two with Damon you'll have some interesting conversation ranging from music (he's a

I trained with Damon for 2 years while attending school in Philadelphia. I was a total beginner then and had no prior experience with MMA / Jiu Jitsu. He was also teaching amateur and professional fighters at his school.
Damon is a great teacher and he got me completely hooked to martial arts. He gives you personal attention and makes it a point to spar with every single person in the academy, including white belts.
His curriculum is also unique. Too many other schools today have students start sparring on their knees and totally ignore the stand-up aspect of the fight game. You will not see

I met Damon During the Summer of 2011 in Rimini Italy, where he was teaching MMA seminars at an international university course I was taking. Damon was very professional and had a wealth of experience. Of everyone taking the course, some had prior martial arts experience, others had non at all. Damon was able to adapt to everyone's needs and learning style and make everyone feel like they were able to pick up what he was teaching with ease. I would recommend his studio to anyone living in his area. Quality instruction from someone with many years of experience.

I've trained at several excellent jiu-jitsu schools since coming to Philadelphia in 1998, and, while I have also received fine instruction at other jiu-jitsu gyms in this city, Damon Umholtz's school has been my favorite, by far. There's a great sense of camaraderie at this school, and every time I go to train there, I can feel my mood instantly improve, and my stresses and worries fade. Damon's school offers a great combination of knowledgeable and thorough instruction, a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, and affordability (including, importantly for me, no contracts). Damon himself has a wealth

I had the honor to attend a few of Damon's seminars. They were excellent!! Damon has a great knowledge base in jiujitsu, judo and other types of martial arts. He has a excellent teaching style and is patient with students new to the martial arts. There is always a positive attitude and will take time on or off the mat to answer questions and point you in the right direction. If you are looking to train in the martial arts, I would highly recommend Philadelphia Jiujitsu! You will not be disappointed.
