Since Dr. John Savell, our Hampton and Newport News veterinarian, took over the veterinary clinic in 2003, it has developed into one of the best-equipped clinics in the region. We now only provide surgical and dentistry procedures using our PADS Program. We began this program to help pets receive care that they needed, but financial constraints made this difficult or impossible, resulting in "economic euthanasia", or continued suffering.
For over two years, this was an ancillary program in our full-service hospital. However, we quickly saw the great need for such a program and have been extremely gratified that we have been able to help several thousand pets suffering from treatable conditions.

Services
Our Newport News veterinary clinic, Deer Park Animal Hospital has been in operation since the 1980s, and was taken over by Dr. John Savell in 2003. Our veterinary hospital has continuously worked to provide top quality surgical and dental services to pets and pet owners in the surrounding areas of Yorktown, Poquoson, Glouchester, Williamsburg and Hampton.
Although our animal hospital serves the Newport News and Hampton area, we routinely treat pets from all along the east coast. We are able to perform a wide range of surgical procedures. At our animal hospital, Dr. Savell and his team have been providing top-notch surgical and dentistry services for pets in the Newport News and Hampton area since 2003.
This is a program initially designed and begun in late 2014 to provide needed surgical or dental care for pets who may otherwise be unable to receive it due to financial reasons. We wanted to use our helping hands to allow people to take care of their furry friends. We were so gratified with the results of the program and the many pets and their owners that we have helped, that we have decided to completely devote our practice to this.
Dr. John Savell is a native of Lake Charles, Louisiana and was graduated from Louisiana State University in 1992 with the Degree of Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. He practiced in Lake Charles for 6 years and another 5 years in the Hampton area before taking ownership of Deer Park Animal Hospital. His hobbies include jogging, reading, hiking, kayaking, boating, and visiting Civl War battle sites in Virginia.
We value our clients' experience at Deer Park Animal Hospital. If your pet or animal is currently a patient, please feel free to complete the following Client Experience Questionnaire. The Questionnaire is in Adobe Acrobat format, and requires the free Acrobat Reader to view. Savell has always gone above and beyond for the care of our family's pets for several years.

Dr. Kelcourse and the staff at Deer Park Animal Hospital are awesome! I called in with an emergency surgery my dog was in need of and they were able to get her in within 2 hours. The staff were so nice and helpful and Dr. Kelcourse explained everything kindly to us. The prices are very reasonable too which helped to lower our stress in this urgent situation. I highly recommend this facility to any pet in need.

I found this place on a Facebook post in the Hampton Roads Lost and found group. If not I would have had to wait much longer and spent more money on our dog. She had a tumor in a sensitive area. I called and the next day, no joke, she had the surgery. The staff is caring, professional, and helpful. The vet is amazing. Explained everything in detail and took extra time to carefully remove that tumor. He was personable and caring and I just can't thank him and his staff enough. It was so worth the drive. It is easy to find too.

Took care of my 13 year-old Beagle, who ended up needing a tooth extracted for every year he’s been alive (yes, 13 teeth extracted at once). Took him in in the morning and had him back around 1PM. Three days later and he is doing great! Will definitely recommend for anyone needing future dental work for their pets. Thank you Dr. Jones and staff!

My dog has been seen here twice. Unfortunately, my 4 year old dog needed cruciate ligament surgery in February 2019 and then again in March 2020 on his other knee. I dropped him off in the morning and was able to pick him up a couple of hours later after surgery. The process was very easy. They are very professional and very low cost compared to what my regular vet wanted to charge me. My dog hasn't had any issues with either surgery. You can tell they genuinely care about your pet(s). I 100% recommend them!
