In the early seventies Monique was preparing herself for a career in nursing. During that time she received a phone call that not only changed her career, but led to her becoming a flourishing business woman today. In those early days, it was her braiding skills which placed her in high demand and led to her instant success following the release of the film "10" featuring Bo Derek with cornrows.

A 1980 People article cited Derek as the catalyst for making cornrows a "cross-cultural craze". Monique quickly found her niche in the Orange County market place as a result of her versatility and skill in servicing a multicultural clientele. Monique's Hair Design has built its reputation through the hair extensions and wig industry by offering clients highly sought after, creative and innovative accentuations.
