Desert Hills is one of Palm Spring's classic boutique hotels. Designed in 1956 by Herbert Burns for Allen and Joanne Petty, Desert Hills retains the nostalgia and charm of Palm Springs. Tucked up against the rugged San Jacinto Mountains in the Historic Tennis Club District, Desert Hills is located just a few blocks from the restaurants, museums and markets that are redefining Downtown Palm Springs.

Every property that Karen Brown recommends is one that the Karen Brown team have seen and enjoyed. Their personal recommendation is written with the belief that where you lay your head each night makes the difference between a good and a great vacation. Desert Hills is one of only five Palm Springs properties to be featured in this world renown travel guide.
Services
In the early 70's, five more rooms were added to the original nine rooms built in 1956. Not unlike the super-sized cars of the time, this new addition rolled out super-sized suites. The One Bedroom Suites offer separate sleeping and lounging rooms, adjoining (and private) rear patios and one includes a kitchenette.
In 1956, legendary designer Herbert Burns unveiled the Desert Hills Hotel as a mountainside hotel in the Historic Tennis Club. Lovingly cared for by Alan and Joanne Petty into the 21st Century, the Vintage King rooms offer a unique vintage experience. While each room has been updated with new king beds and new linens throughout, the original 1956 tile and accents in the bathrooms remain in excellent condition.
Desert Hills is perfect for short or extended stays. Most suites feature kitchenettes, making them ideal for extended stay guests. If you're looking to get away for a bit of self care on a "me" holiday, treat yourself to Desert Hills. Our value-priced, standard and small rooms provide just the right amount of space for your early or mid-week "me-cation".

I adore this place and will always request it when I can. The quiet pool, well appointed rooms and history will revive a tired soul. Convenient to shopping and dining.

Such a great place for a getaway. First time guest and it was a very relaxing getaway with no kids. Got to enjoy the heated pool. People were enjoying their patios and just relaxing.
Easy to walk downtown or grab one of the complimentary bikes to cruise around.
Room was very spacious, clean and the kitchen was well stocked.
Highly recommend.

I'm very torn about how to review Desert Hills. We loved everything about it except for one somewhat major issue - we kept finding large, dead (or dying) cockroaches in our room. Four total during our stay.
The pros - the hotel has beautiful mountain views + the grounds are lush and well manicured. Its a peaceful hotel with only 14 rooms, and it has a much more zen vibe than some of the other hotels I've stayed at in the area (i.e. no music / talking on the phone poolside). As someone who checks mattresses for cleanliness - the mattress in the room we stayed in (vintage king) was very clean and

Best bed we've EVER slept on! it's suuuuper quiet, very zen but did manage to make some friends by the beautiful hot tub. Great amenities like a bbq, bikes, mini fridge, microwave, robes and dish sets. The rooms is tiny and we were 3 feet from a super loud dumpster zone but we'd book it again for Shangri-la xoxo

This place is a pretty neat spot. Its a little retro kind of spot with an amazing atmosphere. It has 14 rooms, there were some under renovation when we were there, but its a great set up. The pool is heated and clean, the hot tub was also clean. Note: there are no children allowed, which for us was what we wanted.
We arrived a little early and there was a slight mix up. Our phone number was mis-transcribed so we didn't get the message on the virtual check in. There is no front desk. However, the housekeeper let us in the gate and called the Ops Manager Eric. He came over and we figured it out

We've been coming here for the past several years, and have been impressed with how nice it is. But the recent remodel is bad. The beautiful furniture has been replaced by uncomfortable stuff from World Market, or some such. The giant tv is stuck to the wall in one position. The new owners(I'm assuming this has changed hands) would have done a lot better buying the sofas and chairs at the fabulous thrift store down the street. And they replaced the high-quality bedding with cheap duvets. Really too bad.
