Eduardo Rocha is a world-class Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu competitor and teacher. He was awarded his black belt by the legendary Royler Gracie, and currently holds a 5th degree black belt as a proud representative of the Ribeiro Jiu Jitsu Association. The biggest lesson that I've learned over the past few years under Master Eduardo is that Jiu-Jitsu is infinite.
There is always room to improve and there is always something to learn. I chose Rocha BJJ because of its structured curriculum and the atmosphere of seriousness, helpfulness, and friendliness. Each instructor and the higher belts all want you to succeed and work with you to show you how to improve your techniques.

Most martial arts focus on kicks and punches. These are great if you are confident that you can trade punches and kicks with an attacker. Exchanging punches is a risk because YOU WILL GET HIT. In Gracie Jiu Jitsu we teach you how to get your opponent into a clinch, take them down to the ground, establish a superior position, and THEN start punching or submitting.

He was awarded his black belt by the legendary Royler Gracie, and currently holds a 6th degree black belt as a proud representative of Six Blades Jiu-Jitsu. Eduardo has proven his expertise in many different arenas of martial arts competition, from professional vale tudo fights to the Jiu-Jitsu World Championships, which he has won five times.
The Fundamentals program focuses on an essential curriculum of techniques that apply directly to the most probable self-defense scenarios. Classes are structured to give students a total understanding of the ranges, transitions and dominant positions that occur in a fight.
This class aims to take someone new to jiu-jitsu and give them simple strategies that provide a great degree of versatility across a variety of situations, with a relatively small number of highly efficient techniques, in as short amount of time as possible. For those students ready to continue building off of the fundamentals, the beginners class provides the next challenge along the way.

Our aim with this class is to start our youngest students on their jiu-jitsu journey with healthy habits, positive associations with hard work, and a focused, disciplined mind. The curriculum for this class includes not only the foundations of sound jiu-jitsu techniques, but also conceptual skills like Focus and Determination that can be applied to achieving goals on or off the mat.

One of the best decisions I’ve made! Eduardo, James and his team of instructors are top tier.
You will quickly see a difference in both, physical and mental aspects.
If you’re thinking about training in BJJ, this is the place! Clean, professional and most important a welcoming environment and awesome people to train with.
Try them out, you won’t be disappointed! 🤙🏽

I've been training with Eduardo since 2012 so this review has been a long time coming. Before I trained with him I trained at several other places. When you start your Jiu Jitsu journey you'll hear a lot of myths like lower belts never tap higher belts. Eduardo has alway told the truth straight up. I remember back in the day I went to the Northern California ADCC trials to watch my, at that time, instructor compete. That was the first time I ever saw a lower belt beat a higher belt. The purple belt who beat my black belt instructor was one of Eduardo's students. When I started training with Eduardo

I thoroughly researched Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training centers in the East Bay and Ribeiro came out on top for me. Eduardo is trained by the best, is a repeat Master World Champion, and is directly involved in the training. I have taken a number of private lessons and the instruction is excellent, clear, precise, and fun. I highly recommend it. It's pretty amazing to be this lucky to have this level of access in Oakland -- very fortunate.

My name is David Meyer and I am one of the first American’s to ever earn a black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. I have taught hundreds of seminars and trained in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu schools all around the world. I take every chance I get to recommend and to train at Rocha Jiu Jitsu. Professor Eduardo is a true master. His knowledge and ability to teach is simply the best you can find, and he also builds true internal and external strength in his students. It is unusual to find someone who can teach such a great class, and can also win world championships himself. I highly recommend this school

The instructors and students at Rocha Jiu Jitsu are all friendly and courteous. I personally am not gifted in jiu jitsu or grappling by any measure, so it was great that the instructors were very helpful when I wasn't getting it. I think the fundamentals class in particular is exactly the type of class that every white belt should be taking. Overall, great place to train.

Rocha Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is the go to place if you’re interested in challenging yourself physically and mentally. Professor Eduardo is a fantastic instructor and he is really good at pointing out small details and concepts which will help you better understand the techniques that you are learning. The gym is clean, students are friendly, and there are structured programs for beginners and advanced students. This is a great place to train.

This is a great gym to train Jiu Jitsu in the gi! Eduardo Rocha has had his black belt for over 20 years, and he trained with Helio and the Gracie brothers. In other words, his roots are uncommonly deep and his lineage is very, very pure. And he instructs class personally nearly every day of the week at his gym. Even in the BJJ Mecca that is the Bay Area, you will not receive regular, direct instruction from someone this close to the source at any other place, and that is simply a fact.
Eduardo will expect you to train hard and to show up regularly. If you do those things, then you WILL get

Best instructors in the world! I'm a blue belt at Edge in Hayward which is an affiliate academy but we do all our testing and seminars at Master Eduardo's. I have been to a few schools around the bay area over the past four years of training, but two years ago I began learning under Eduardo's black belt, Coach Vernie at Edge. Their concepts and way of breaking down techniques are amazing, teaching submissions and top game primarily have made jiu jitsu so much better for me, even as a smaller guy. Master Eduardo is a Jedi on the mats and his details and pressure that he teaches are

The instruction is clear, the classes are well structured, and the environment is welcoming and professional. Great for all levels!
My detail-oriented brain craves to know the "why" behind every move, so it's wonderful that the teachers are very specific from the onset.
Many of the students are training to compete and they're in class several times per week. For the first couple of weeks, I had pre-class butterflies, but I kept coming back because the people are genuine, helpful and friendly. I've been at the gym for more

I have been training at this school for almost a year. I can't say enough good things about it. Everyone is friendly and welcoming. The instruction is of the highest quality. Eduardo is a World Champion and so are some of his students. It is a great workout and its so much fun, that I forget that I'm working out. Eduardo's studio is for those serious about their training. When I first moved to Oakland I spent a month or so touring different studios, and settled on Rocha for a few fundamental reasons:
1. Top level instruction. Eduardo is the real deal, and expects the very best from his students. Don't expect hand holding and reassurance, but do expect your jiu jitsu to improve tremendously if you commit.
2. Great training partners. The majority of the fighters here have been with Eduardo for years, and its an exceptional group of hardworking people. Many travel far distances to train here.

I trained here for about 2.5 years, with occasional travel/injury breaks. It costs a typical amount for quality bjj. I believe that the level of instruction here is first rate. Regardless of your level, you will learn proper technique from world-class bjj instructors and competitors. I feel very fortunate that I learned bjj fundamentals from Eduardo Rocha.
I would strongly recommend this gym for anyone who is serious about learning bjj, improving their game, or if you want to compete in tournaments.
My only criticism is that it costs money to earn a stripe/belt. I only tested for 2 stripes because

My experience with Eduardo is great, and it keeps getting better the more I progress. I've been with this academy for some time now and really appreciate how Eduardo's instruction is dynamic based on student level and reflective of the evolving techniques within the Jiu Jitsu community. This is not a school just for the hardened advance players, nor is it a school just for the softest of beginners; this is a school for everyone at any point in their Jiu Jitsu journey. Eduardo makes sure all of his students have an excellent foundation to build on, and he challenges his advanced students

I've been training with Eduardo for just over a year. I originally came in looking for something to help me stay in shape. Jiujitsu has taken my fitness to another level. My flexibility, strength, and endurance has improved drastically in the short amount of time spent here. I've trained Taekwondo, Muay Thai, and Boxing...they all shine in their own way, but Jiujitsu is a different kind of animal. You really need to experience it in order to appreciate the mental and physical demand of the art.

I've been training at Rocha for about 3 years. I had tried a little bit of Judo earlier, and when I was looking for a place to pick it back up I stumbled upon this academy. It took me a couple of months to fully appreciate my good fortune. In looking for a place to dabble in a little grappling, I'd wound up training under a truly world-class instructor. Imagine the endless variety of positions two people can end up in when fighting. Now imagine someone who can tell you, for each of those positions, the most advantageous, physically efficient response. That's Eduardo.

I have been making the drive from Richmond to train under Professor Eduardo Rocha for almost two years and highly recommend his academy to anyone who is interested in becoming a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu practitioner. Although I tried several gyms closer to me, the ability of Professor Rocha and his black belts to distill Jiu-Jitsu techniques to their students was unmatched. Professor Rocha holds his students, his black belts, and himself to high standards and hard work is expected. Eduardo Rocha is extraordinarily technically proficient. The quality of his instruction is as good as what you'd get at one of those high-priced seminars, the ones that cost as much for a few hours as your gym costs for a month. In fact, Eduardo sometimes travels to offer such seminars himself.

This is hands down the best Jiu Jitsu gym in Northern California, and certainly one of the top gyms in CA / the USA.
Whether you are looking to compete at the highest levels of Jiu Jitsu or MMA, or you are just trying to learn some self defense and get in great shape, Rocha is perfect for you.
I moved to SF 1 1/2 yrs ago to finish school at SF State, and began searching for a great gym. After trying several different gyms, I found my home at Rocha. I loved it so much that I was commuting daily to Oakland from SF to train rather than joining one of the gyms minutes from my house in the city

I did a lot of research before choosing Rocha Jiu-Jitsu. It's like choosing a college - not all degrees are made equally. There is no better place to train in northern CA. Eduardo teaches with a style that breeds consistency and confidence.
The first time I entered a tournament, I called early to register. I explained that it was my first, and I was nervous that I would forget something, like when weigh-ins happened. The person on the phone said, "OK, don't worry. Weight class? Belt-level? Gym / instructor?" When I answered, "Eduardo Rocha Jiu-Jitsu," she laughed
