Hand to Hand empowers and positively transforms individuals and communities to create a peaceful and just society through martial arts and self defense. Hand to Hand provides traditional martial arts training and self-defense classes. The center was founded in 1980 by Professor Coleen Gragen and remains under the leadership of Chief Instructor Sonya Richardson.

We teach adults of all genders and are affiliated with the Kajukenbo Association of America. The Martial Arts Program provides training in the eclectic art of Kajukenbo. Students of this art develop excellent body conditioning, power, balance, and fluidity of movement. Training at Hand to Hand includes the study of basic techniques, traditional forms, fighting strategy, practical self defense, and weapons practice.
Services
Hand to Hand's martial arts program provides training in the eclectic art of Kajukenbo. It is a practical and beautiful martial art that combines the best techniques and training methods of five traditional martial arts systems. The name KAJUKENBO was created by combining the first few letters of each style: KA (Karate), JU (Judo and Jujitsu), KEN (Kenpo), and BO (Chinese boxing).
Professor Coleen Gragen was the founder and head instructor of Hand to Hand Kajukenbo Self Defense Center. She trained in the martial arts for over 25 years and held an 8th degree black belt and the title of "Professor" in Kajukenbo. She is the first woman, and one of only five martial artists, to be given the title in the Gaylord Method of Kajukenbo.
Professor Sonya Richardson has been training in the martial arts since 1990 and began practicing as a licensed physical therapist in 1988. She received her 3rd degree Black Belt in Kajukenbo, the Gaylord Method, under Professor Coleen Gragen and was promoted to 8th degree Black Belt by her current teacher Grandmaster Barbara Bones.
As one of the oldest continuously operating self-defense training centers in the United States, Hand to Hand is a supportive and professional environment for learning skills that enable anyone to live more safely. We specialize in practical, comprehensive women's* self defense that relies on effective physical, verbal, and emotional strategies.
What is self-defense in the world we are living in today? What does it mean to assert ourselves, set clear boundaries, and protect ourselves in current conditions? Hand to Hand Kajukenbo Self Defense Center is offering a self defense class that will support our individual and collective exploration of these questions.
