Always a favorite. I recommend the Sante Fe Special. Got to ask for it. Tortilla, sauce, cheese, steak, tortilla, sauce, egg, cheese, sauce, peppers and onions. Plus you get two. Sauce is a brown sauce and very spicy. I have mine made one queso and one sour cream sauce. So big I have to take half home. Great heated up the next day. Fajitas are always great. Chicken enchiladas very good. Number 15 on the lunch menu. Two tamales and one beef enchilada covered in meat sauce. Always quality ingredients and great prices.

Amazing service and always amazing food, there's typically no wait but if there is it's never more than 5 minutes. Food comes out very fast and always nice and hot, drinks are always full along with chips and salsa. My absolute favorite Mexican restaurant around here that doesn't cost a fortune. Highly recommend stopping by and grabbing yourself something to eat or even a drink from the bar.

This place used to be great: pre-Covid. We were excited to go there this evening, our first time since 2019. It's changed, and not for the better. The chips were stale, the queso dip was watered down and tasteless. I had the beef fajitas. The flour tortillas were tiny and tasted really strange--store bought ones have better texture and flavor. The guacamole was tasteless, it looked like it came from a restaurant supply--definitely not made fresh on site unless it was from a reconstituted mix. It's hard to mess up bean soup; it would have been fine, if it had been hot--tap water

This is our favorite Mexican restaurant in Denton. The service is always good. The servers are quick, polite, and thorough. Even the man who appears to be the owner/manager is always out in the floor seating guests and wrapping silverware. The inside is clean and well designed creating a really pleasant atmosphere. The margaritas are strong and delicious. The chips and salsa are solid. And every entree we've ever ordered we love. Highly recommend the fajitas, shrimp kabobs and street tacos.

You can't go wrong here. This is the Mexican food restaurant that's dependable. They deliver quality service, generally really prompt, solid chips and salsa, and all the entrees I've had have been a solid "A". I typically got the the fajitas that my wife and I split and we love it every time. It's price point is right. Quick to offer refills. Very friendly. Reasonable atmosphere - especially for being in a strip mall. Can't wait to go back again.

Hand''s down the very best Mexican restaurant in "L'l d," with a style of coastal Mexico,, right down to the warm tortillas and freshly-made picante sauce; I usually don't stray far from my usual excellent chicken enchilada dinner with the real unsweetened chocolate mole sauce, but have been impressed by everything on the menu I've fried: their beef, chicken, or pork tamales rock!

Chrissy was the best. I FELT PAMPERED and Loved. Food was great. Steak n chicken fajita was tender just no seasoning. The caso n brisket was off the chain. Sooo good! Blue margaritas was over flowing and yes it has alchohol and so yummy. Did i say it was so good. Hidden gem in Denton Texas. Overall loved the atmosphere. Staff looked friendly. The flan is to live for!

Alright I have had El Matador a few times now so I can confidentially say this place ROCKS!! Have you ever had a time when you went to a Mexican food restaurant, ordered beef fajitas and the beef was chewy? NEVER HAPPENS HERE! I always get fajitas (delivered to my home, might I add) and it's always fresh, tender, hot, and delicious!!!
Margaritas and flautas are delish as well. Wish I could add a picture to my review but I never have the self control to take a picture before I start eating it.

My favorite Tex-Mex restaurant in Denton. After moving from South Texas to North Texas, I quickly noticed there were not as many Tex-Mex restaurants here. There are plenty of "hole in the wall" Mexican restaurants with delicious & authentic menus, but I was still needing my Tex-Mex fix.
I was happy to find El Matador, a locally owned Mexican/Tex-Mex restaurant, on University, next to Kroger. I was even happier when I tried their Enchiladas Verdes, and they tasted just like my favorite restaurant's enchiladas in South Texas. Maybe even better?
Most importantly, they deliver

I wish I could give this place zero stars.
Soooo this thing fell from a vent, onto my dad's head at El Matador in Denton. This was his first time coming back after finding a cockroach in his soup 10 years ago. So gross. Also the employees and manager literally didn't do anything and we still paid full price for our horrible experience. When my dad complained, the manager just said "we have pest control" and didn't do anything. Unacceptable.

We visited this restaurant due to the Yelp recommendations. I am really questioning the four star rating. While this place is "not bad", it is very very average.
Always start with the positive. The service was excellent. Our server was attentive and familiar with the menu. The margaritas were large and priced well. Not top shelf, but definitely doable.
I ordered the enchilada plate. The ground beef was dry and bland, but the chicken was pretty good. The rice was dry and the beans were bland. The green sauce on my enchiladas was pretty tasty saving the beef enchilada from being a total

Thanks to yelpers I went to try this place. Went on a busy Friday night and it took a while to be seated but it was worth the wait. Not bad service for being busy. Queso dip was good and not just warmed up cheese. I had mango margarita which was not watered down. It was actually nice to drink a good cold margarita. Fajita chimichanga was delicious. Rice was dry but the charro beans made up for it. Great Mexican food place if you are around Denton. Will definitely revisit.

Now that I've been on Yelp for 2 years, I thought it would be fitting to update one of my reviews from my first day of Yelping.
I was one of those people that utilized Yelp, but didn't get an account for a really long time and was on the fence about it. Of course, once I did open an account, I had so many reviews already written in my head that I posted a lot in the first few days.
I didn't really see a need to update many of those early reviews since they were the average of many visits. However, there have been some recent changes at El Matador, which continues to be one of
