Oom Yung Doe training helps your child develop strength, flexibility, coordination, and control, as well as self defense.
The common understanding of Traditional Martial Arts (TMA) in Asia is that it incorporates morals, etiquette, and meaning along with mental, physical and spiritual development - but in the U.S. the common focus is on a visible target. The focus of TMA tournaments is on winning over yourself, whereas the focus on tournaments of common martial arts or sports is winning over others.

Update: I've been training at Oom Yung Doe for a little over a year now. The woman who walked in to the school then would never have thought my current self was possible.
The chronic illness that had improved in two weeks is now completely gone. (I couldn't work or even be on my own safely for 9 years, this is a HUGE for me.) My scoliosis is decreasing, my back is strong and flexible in ways I never imagined possible. I am in by far the best shape of my life, I'm flexible, my balance has dramatically improved. Not only my body but my mind is healing. I am learning how to help myself through everything

I've done various forms of martial arts on and off for over twenty years, and this school is by far the best I've trained at. The instructors are tremendously knowledgeable, and incredibly committed to their students. I joined in September 2017 with several chronic injuries, and I've received so much support in dealing with them - both in terms of movements and healing to do, and in terms of keeping me motivated and continuing to train. The other students are welcoming and encouraging, and it's been amazing to be part of this community.

Update: Initially wrote this for the N. Cambridge school. N. Cambridge has since merged with the Somerville school. Still stand by my review. Somerville has been just as welcoming and the majority of Instructors are the same.
I’ve been a student at Oom Yung Doe N. Cambridge for about three months.
#MeToo first brought me to Oom Yung Doe. In need of a restorative something or other to recoup my waning confidence, a women’s self defense class seemed a prudent choice.
After a few weeks of Saturday afternoon classes, sure I was beginning to feel a bit more confident. But not just confident,

I have now been training at OYD for 5 months now. I don't usually write online reviews, but I have gained so much more than I expected here I thought I would share.
What struck me first when I joined OYD is the dedication of the instructors. They really take a deep interest in how you are doing - what your goals are, what particular problems you may be facing - and they clearly spend a great deal of time preparing each lesson and thinking about what each individual has to gain from it. As a teacher myself, I was really struck by the feeling that these people really cared about my progress

Training has changed the lens of which I view life. The movements are challenging and I’ve never felt my body move this way — ever! I’ve gained confidence, and feel more comfortable with being able to defend myself in any given situation. I’d recommend the school of Oom Yung Doe to anyone looking to improve! It’s a challenge for sure, but one that’s been worth it every step of the way.

This review and my praise for the school of Oom Yung Doe is long overdue! My son has been training with assistant regional head instructor Andrew for several years. Andrew is commendably patient with kids of various ages and abilities, very knowledgeable and skilled both at teaching and in the art of this martial discipline; the classes are always very efficient and organized; and I can clearly see great improvements in my son's physical stamina and strength, coordination, and overall self-confidence.

Oom Yung Doe is a wonderful place to learn martial arts. I joined OYD in September 2017 and have loved it since. I have grown both physically and mentally. I have become stronger, flexible and lost quite a bit of weight. I have also become much more disciplined and positive. The instructors here are really motivating and supportive. It’s fun to train with the people that come here. I recommend it to anyone who wants to get a good workout and learn some cool martial arts.

Okay....let's say you're over 60, like me. And let's say your horribly out of shape, like me. And lets say your knees hurt, your hips hurt, your shoulder hurts....your HAIR hurts, all just like mine do. And let's say you're not thrilled with the idea of joining a gym because you know you'll just pay for it and use it a few times, then start slacking off and eventually just stop going.....kind of like I felt back in April. Okay....here's a plan: Give this school a try!! Trust me....I was as skeptical as anyone when I first walked through their front door 8 months ago. But you know what? I've lost

I love practicing at OYD. I am doing things at my age ( in my 60's) I didn't think, because of SO many injuries over the years, I'd ever be able to do again.
I joined OYD 4 and a half months ago. I attend class 5-6 times a week! That my muscles and joints feel recovered enough over night to practice so often speaks to the fact that this not your average gym membership. This is an intact, chi (energetic) system based on a tradition of principles that help develop, restore and heal the whole system.
I am in better mental and physical shape with increased endurance, flexibility

I decided to try Oom Yung Doe based off Yelp reviews after attending another local martial arts school for a few months and not making much progress in terms of fitness/martial arts skill/change in mindset. I am SO glad I took the leap and emailed one of the instructors at Oom Yung Doe. After only 2 months of training my condition has changed immensely and I have a half of a notebook full of new skills. I even did a really basic form at a local tournament (which was so fun and recalled all those exciting jitters of sports/performing arts growing up). The community is diverse and inclusive (if you

Started my Oom Yung Doe training 11 months ago. Wasn't in a good place personally and was fortunate enough to randomly meet a man and after a few minutes of speaking, challenged me to consider traditional martial arts training. Having played sports my whole life, all I knew was weight lifting and doing cardio, never did I think I'd entertain this idea. After perusing the website I decided to give it a try. All it took was one class and I was hooked! My body has begun to undergo a transformation. I can move in ways I never thought would be possible. I have a newfound self confidence that has impacted

Beautiful studio space, knowledgable instructors, amazing results. I have nothing but positive things to say about this school, and the OYD community in general. I found this training 2 years ago, and I am so happy that I did. Not only am I physically fit, I feel incredible mentally. This practice gave me the skills and tools I needed to combat anxiety, boost my confidence, and overall just live a happier, more productive life.

I started Oom Yung Doe when I was 62 years old. I came to it with knees with no miniscus and arthritis, achilles tendonitis, ADD and OCD. After 4 years of practice, my knee problems are gone and my psychologist of 20 years told me that I should stop seeing him because my control of my ADD and OCD had so greatly improved in the past few years.
A half year back, a friend came over to me and told me that I looked great. I responded that i was the same weight as when he saw me the year before. He replied that it had nothing to do with weight. It seemed that i was carrying myself differently and projecting

Starting training in traditional martial arts is the best thing i've done for myself. The instructors here are patient, knowledgable, and warm. Movements are challenging but results are almost immediate, no doubt there was a huge improvement by the end of one month.
Just like all exercise , consistency is key and instructors are good at reminding you of this without being intrusive or self promoting. This place makes me feel i belong there and i am so glad i've brought it into my life

I came upon this school while I was walking in North Cambridge for one of my acupuncture appointments, I was going to acupuncture because I had persistent pain in my upper back from shoulder to shoulder , my neck (pain so debilitating that I did not want to check my side mirrors while driving) and occasionally my lower back as well ( felt like a disc was getting pinched in my spine as I'd lean forward).
There is a sign on the school's front window which says;
"If you seek average, go else where. If you want excellence, step in."

I recently started practicing Oom Yung Doe in this location. I have to say I am so pleased, that now I am sure this will be part of my life from now on. Jon, the House Instructor is a fantastic teacher! The people that attend are, as you would expect with a martial arts discipline, super respectful and accepting of everyone who comes, newcomers and old. I have been battling chronic fatigue for a couple years, and this practice has energized me like I haven't felt in so long!

During my glory days in Tae Kwon Do at age 12, I really loved the physical activity and stress relief that came with punching and kicking. So recently I've been looking to get back into martial arts. I found Oom Yung Doe on Yelp because of its great reviews and its proximity to my house. I'd never heard of this form of martial arts, but the website claimed I could take a complimentary introductory lesson. Why not?
I called on Sunday afternoon and was signed up for a free class the next day at 8 PM. That was quick. Not knowing what to expect, I showed up to the small studio in workout

Really solid training center. Kind of unique to find a traditional martial arts school. I've looked around Boston at lots of different styles and have been very pleased with my experiences at Oom Yung Doe. The instructors are powerful and genuine as practitioners and the system seems very deep. Excited to have found these guys. Thanks.

The facility is clean and well kept.. with a bazillion photos of people (Instructors presumably) who have never set foot on the grounds doing a bunch of unbelivable things. The young man behind the desk wasn't exactly welcoming- I'd been by the place a few times and recieved nothing but leery glances out the window from him, it's possible this tainted my most recent encounter.
When he finally did perk up and say hello was when I'd almot gotten myself all the way to his office door (he'd just sat down to dinner.. at his desk..? which could have been why he wasn't

I started studying at the Oom Yung Doe school, located in Davis Square, for almost 2 years now. I joined about the same time I enlisted in the National Guard, as a way to stay in shape. The experience has been invaluable to me. Besides the health benefits and stress relief I've experienced since taking classes, I have been able to better focus and apply myself to the challenges I've faced. The instructors and great and can develop a lesson plan to fit any level of experience or physical condition. Anyone looking for a way to improve themselves should take the time to try a lesson.

The school has a highly energeic and welcoming feel when you first walk in. You will be greeting immediately by a 2nd degree black belt instructor who will take the time to understand your personal goals. Based on your goals, the instructors will recommend a program. Their unique method of tailoring each program to each student's goals and needs is amazing. Once you are on a program, the Instructors will continuously adapt the program to your abilities and needs. I feel I have a personal trainer every time I practice. You are also regularly instructed by 8th degree black belt International

Oom Yung Doe is the deepest form of movement I have encountered in my life. Combined with meditation, practicing Oom Yung Doe has given me the strength to change my life for the better.
Having exercised my entire life, surfing, running, weight lifting and sports, i still found myself in mediocre shape, mentally and physically. At 25 years old it was hard to kick all the bad habits i picked up during my college years, mainly drinking and smoking. Working in the service industry left me fatigued and depressed.

I was lucky enough to be invited to a free workshop for my triathlon team a little while back. The workshop they provided for us was fantastic! It was a challenging series of exercises that really made you think about training breath and flexibility and balance in a way that we may not be used to when otherwise cross training for tris.
I've tried a few different types of martial arts classes in the past since I have had both ankle and knee injuries and wanted to work on regaining some balance and proprioception I don't have on one side, but I've found them uncomfortable or exacerbating

I was recently in Boston visiting friends. One of them has been training at this location in Davis square for sometime now and finally talked me into coming in for some training. I do yoga and rock climb so I'm pretty active, but this was different. There was a focus on connecting breath to movement as we went through a rigorous routine. At first, like anything new, i felt awkward, but the instruction, atmosphere, and message they are conveying was top notch. I definitely can recommend this place for anyone looking for something different, challenging, and more rewarding than your typical

This place is worth a visit for many reasons -- information, rejuvenation, and relaxation among them. It features a simple layout, skilled instructors, and many helpful weekly open-studio hours and group-practice sessions.
Instructors I recommend: John and Neal. Surely there are other good ones as well, but these two I have met and practiced with on several occasions.
I recommend the Oom Yung Doe to anyone dealing with stress, seeking (inner and outer) strength, or simply exploring their martial arts training options. Definitely worth a visit!
