Services
Through the years, our goal has remained the same. We guide each child to become a happy, self-motivated learner with a positive self image and global perspective. At Montessori School of Duluth, children learn valuable educational, social, and life skills. At the same time, children's innate need for order, learning through their senses, and working at their own pace are fostered.
The Montessori School of Duluth started as the Montessori Elementary School - the first private, independent, nondenominational elementary school in the history of Duluth. The school was founded in 1981 by Anne and Al Nephew to serve fifteen students graduating from a Montessori Children's House.

The elementary classroom, originally located on Park Point, was taught by Anne who earned her teaching license from St. Scholastica College, and her MA from the University of Minnesota.Anne earned her AMI elementary diploma in Dublin, Ireland, where she lived for a year with her young family, an experience that her grown children still remember well.
Montessori education is a world-wide movement, and the most popular alternative education in the United States.

It's based on the work of the famed Italian educator, Dr. Maria Montessori (1880-1952), who identified what she called "sensitive periods" of learning in preschool and elementary children, and developed a method of education based on mixing ages, collaborative learning, specialized teacher training, and very specially designed educational materials. It sets the gold standard for early childhood education.
Since 1981, Montessori School of Duluth has provided exceptional preschool, kindergarten, and elementary education to children in Minnesota's Twin Ports. In 2019, we opened a new toddler program. Through the years, our goal has remained the same. We guide each child to become a happy, self-motivated learner with a positive self-image and global perspective.
Extended care is available for an extra fee, beforehand starting at 8am and afterward until 5pm. This program is open to the community. If you are signed up for the summer program, you will be automatically enrolled in our summer camps (below), and you will not have to pay extra for the camps.

Full-day hours are generally from about 8:30am to 3:30pm, with a half-day option ending at 11:15 AM, and before/after care available from 7:30-8:30 and 3:30-5:30.Children bring their own lunches and the school provides snacks. Rates, dates, and exact times are determined each summer, and the upcoming summer's specifics will be posted above when they're ready.

My children are so happy at MSD. I love the small school setting and the beautiful outdoor play space. Small classrooms sizes are a BIG plus! The Montessori method fosters a love for learning.

Toxic for children. Abusive and neglectful. Poorly run. Amy and Claudia are dangerous...and cover for each other. Mr. Keith is an ineffective board leader. The best they could do is close the doors now before they destroy more children. Shame. Shame. Shame. CPS...are you listening???

Montessori became our home away from home
when we moved here from Nashville TN. It was the perfect place to send both of our girls. They thrived and learned so much in a very short amount of time. Socially and educationally the girls were nurtured. It made being in a new place easier knowing they were in the best place to learn.

This is the second year we have chosen to send our little man to Montessori School of Duluth and we couldn't be happier. He has had so much personal growth and the staff is so supportive and amazing. The classrooms have some new outdoor space for our kids to learn and there are some exciting outdoor renovations in the works that are sure to enhance their experience even more. So happy with our choice in MSD!

I send both of my girls to the Montessori School of Duluth. In addition to following the Montessori method, this particular school benefits from a great location, experienced staff, an a rich history dating back to the school's founding in 1981. My kids will be there for the next decade.

This school is amazing! We have been enrolling our children for several years because we believe in this particular school and type of education it has to offer. Our children receive great 1 on 1 attention and are given freedom to choose their work and pace in this prepared environment. The school did go through some change over the past year, but just when I thought the education and school couldn't get any better it did! The new head of school and administration is amazing and are offering my children a superior education. One of a kind. The location of this school is tucked away in a residential
