After moving to Alexandria, VA, founder Jeremy Lafreniere was encouraged by his coaches to form a club for practicing Jiu-Jitsu. After much deliberation Capital was founded at Cora Kelly Magnet School in 2001 where Jeremy was a 4th grade teacher. Each evening the school's art room was turned a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training center.
Jeremy would set up by pushing chairs and tables aside - crayons spilling onto the floor - and connecting old mats trucked in from the gymnasium. Once mats were down, Jeremy taught a few of his friends the self-defense, grappling, throwing, and striking techniques he had learned from the Gracie family.

The coaching staff are good when working with the kids. Unfortunately, they are unresponsive to military families who need to disenroll due to PCS'ing. Even after emailing numerous times over three months requesting to be disenrolled, we continue to be charged. Given this company and gyms decision to charge families who are no longer using their gym, I would highly recommend interested parties look elsewhere.
Update - 4 months after sending the notification to cancel, we are still being charged.

I was more than satisfied with every aspect of Capital, from it training staff to its handling of military and emergency issues. As a member of the military, finding gyms that work with us to make sure we are not locked into a contract is hard to come by. But one of the owners being a former military member, has allowed them to come up with a system that benefits soldiers who train there. The amount of accumulated experience at this gym is outstanding and really provides multiple levels or training styles to help aid any type of student.

Wide variety of programs (Muay Thai, BJJ, Strength and Fitness, Ruck, etc.) built and run to provide both physical and mental challenges for all levels, from beginner to advanced. Capital coaches and owners foster growth and a real sense of community.

Capital MMA Lorton meets you where you are with your experience level and moves you forward in the most productive way. No pressure, no problems. The instruction is professional, easily understandable, and functional. Chad, Paul and their instructor team are able to personalize instruction based on specific limitations, so you gain capability, regardless.

My three children and I have been going to Capital for nearly two years. Chad and Paul, the proprietors of this new location, are good people! The staff is professional, courteous, and very knowledgeable. Should you decide to become a member, you will quickly find that the people here become more like family than training partners! I recommend this place to EVERYONE!!!!
