Common Ground Jiu Jitsu
Our mission is to motivate and inspire those who have chosen Brazilian Jiu Jitsu as a path for transforming their lives. We seek to engage and welcome people of diverse backgrounds by promoting a common interest in martial arts and personal development. We accomplish this by providing collaborative learning experiences that cultivate a passion for the art, a connection with one another, and a desire to fulfill one's true potential.

We imagine a training environment where people seek common ground, support each other's goals and dreams, and ultimately feel empowered. We teach Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, which is in essence the science and art of controlling the human body that leads to a submission. We strive to present our authentic selves to others and have a friendly, open attitude, making it easier to connect with one another.
Services
We teach Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, which is in essence the science and art of controlling the human body that leads to a submission. It is a systems-based approach to combat that relies heavily on grappling and creating maximum leverage. Our curriculum is organized, systematic, and comprehensive. Lesson plans are detailed and techniques are taught in a sequential progression that maximizes learning.
Introduction to BJJ s specifically designed to help you quickly learn the most essential techniques from every position and get you ready to start sparring with confidence. It is a 4-month long cycling curriculum that covers each of the main positions in jiu jitsu - how to pin, how to escape, key submissions, takedowns, guard passing, and guard retention.
I have been training at Common Ground since it opened and it has been a really great experience. Alex's teaching style is systematic and his instruction is clear and easy to follow. Sally does an amazing job at the front, keeping everyone informed about changes and being on top of any questions and inquiries.
A. If you are a beginner, we recommend that you check out a Gi Fundamentals (101) class for your free trial. You will be able to borrow a gi (uniform) for your free class. You can view our full class schedule here. A. The gi and no-gi classes have different curriculums. The gi classes are taught and trained in the traditional uniform.

Super welcoming gym! Excellent training for all levels! There communication is great when starting and I was a dropin from out of state. Even knowing I wasn't a long term member, they took me in with open arms. As a female, it's a little unnerving to train in new places. I had zero issues, learned a ton and will be going back. Highly recommended!!!

I feel very lucky to have such a great gym right down the street and I highly recommend it to anyone looking to get into martial arts or those with experience. Coach Alex's lesson plan is clearly presented and the class flows very efficiently. I began learning about Jiu Jitsu here six months ago but community has been together for years and the environment is very friendly and welcoming.

This is a really great martial arts school. The school is quite inexpensive for seriously awe inspiring instruction from Alex and Sally. The skillset and knowledge base is staggering. As a new student I feel a lot of encouragement here. They teach Jiu Jitsu both as a self-defense, which I am most interested in, as well as a competitive sport (where rules apply!). Interestingly, the school has a very relaxed atmosphere and is totally different from the Tae Kwon Do school school I attended many years ago where there was a very strict Master and student relationship. Would highly recommend Common

I love training with everyone here. Great place to learn some BJJ skills with good people and good vibes. The instructors strive to create an environment that makes it fun and safe to learn. If you've been training for a while or are just getting started, check this place out!
Edit, Sept 2019: just updating to say I still love this place. Coach Alex is a great instructor - detail oriented and both he and manager Sally strive to create an enrivonment where everyone feels welcome and safe. Each class goes through several moves, but they all build off each other into a nice flow. Great place to learn

Common Ground Jiu Jitsu is a place where everyone who wants to grow, will grow.
Why you should stop by and try it out: It is affordable, memberships are month to month, there is plenty of street parking, there is plenty of classes including kickboxing and kids bjj classes and it is in a great location for most people.
Why you will stay: There is no ego in this gym. What you learn is taught to you in a simple and direct way that makes it simple for you to digest. It is completely pragmatic and the patience from the teachers and openness to clear up confusion makes it a place for you to naturally

Awesome bjj school. The class schedule makes training after work a breeze. I love coach Alex and Coach Ivan, they break down techniques well for beginners like myself, and have a wealth of knowledge to teach the more experienced students.
Classes are well paced and leave me exhausted by the end, I am able to get through the whole thing but am exhausted by the end.
The environment is excellent, very supportive without letting anyone be too comfortable or stagnant.
I look forward to ending my days at common ground.

Alex Aung is an amazing, technical Black Belt coach under Shawn Williams. I was very fortunate to be able to learn under Professor Alex. He is kind, professional and truly cares about his students.
