We were welcomed by Tony, Eli, Tanner - some super amazing and passionate staff at both Grotto 1 and 2 locations! Such folks make or break the community vibe. Always a smile as soon as you step foot inside. We are first time visitors and they made us feel at home immediately. Definitely a local-gym kinda feeling - Everyone we encountered seemed friendly.
The setting is phenomenal; great variety of new and interesting volumes- a treat for comp climbers but also lots of easier climbs for the beginners (watched Eli gave a lesson on falling to new boulderers).
Bouldering mats great quality. The

Left another gym to join the Grotto and I'm super happy with my decision. The gym aesthetic at the Grotto 2 is really awesome, and the setting style has really brought my stoke back after taking a break (gyms closed due to Covid). Also love having easy access to the Kilterboard at the mission valley gym. I am recommending this gym to everyone I meet.

I held my sons 11th birthday party here and all the kids had a blast. Troy did a great job introducing climbing safety and etiquette and, after turning the kids loose to climb, was patient with them when they needed reminders not to get too close to other climbers. The climbing routes are clearly identified, which made it easy for the kids to find routes that were at their level.
Party set up was pretty simple, they provide a plain folding table (definitely bring a table cloth, the table is well worn). They set us up inside due to the higher outdoor temps, but they also set up parties on the outdoor

Grotto has a friendly environment, one of our kids practices with the recreational team and loves her teammates and coach, and our family of beginner climbers always have a great experience. I recently went to my first Grotto yoga class and the vinyasa/hatha session was a strong practice with excellent cueing for modifications. The membership is an excellent value.

Edit: I really enjoyed my second visit and have purchased a 1 year membership with Grotto. I will recommend this climbing and yoga gym to friends, and highly suggest you, the reader of this review, give this gym a try.
I came here with a friend to try rock climbing/ bouldering. Front desk associate was very kind. I signed up for a 1 week deal which comes with shoes and chalk for the visit. My friend who has a lot more experience showed me around, then after a warm up we climbed for about an hour. It was a great experience, and a surprisingly hard physical activity, Doing "easy routes" was challenging

Great environment! Good vibes! It's been such a blast every time I've gone and the routes are challenging but fun. And it's such a great community at the Grotto. Tony is the most passionate and most friendly guy you'll ever meet-he is such a blessing at this gym and just makes the whole experience even better! highly recommend this place to everyone: whether you're just trying it out for the first time or have been climbing for years! Easily the best in San Diego!

I love everything about Grotto! The staff is awesome - friendly, knowledgeable, helpful, inspiring! The community at the gym is so fun, I feel like I make new friends every time I go. Climbing is my favorite workout because it's full body without really feeling like exercise! It's like playing on the playground as a kid! The routes at Grotto are so good and they're always changing it up. Can't say enough good things about this place.

I went back this week after a 6 week hiatus because of the rollbacks to reopening. There's been a bit of changes. Now, reservations are no longer required, but everyone is asked download the Mind Body app and self check in on the app before entering the facility. Front desk will still take temp. If you have trouble with the app, they are still able to check you in by name at the front desk. There is definitely quite a bit more people this time compared to back in June, but the ventilation is still great and I am still able to maintain 6 ft from everyone else, so I do feel quite safe coming

What a GOOD TIME! This is a bouldering only gym but the problems are super fun!
They have a lot of unique problems compared to Mesa rim and vertical hold. I feel like they are the most well thought out, which probably is related to their lack of toproping walls and less space in general.
Grotto likes to host a lot of unique events, and provides free climbing during national climbing day and pride. I would buy a membership here over Mesa rim if I lived closer.
In general, parking is pretty easy and has a decently sized lot. I wouldn't know where to park if this lot filled up though but

This gym is somewhat small compared to the other gyms in the area, including vertical hold and mesa rim. There is only bouldering. That being said these walls, are SUPER well done. They are uniquely challenging and the routes are well thought out and extremely fun to do. In this aspect, they have all the other climbing gyms in San Diego beat.
They hold various promotions during the year to get people to come try them out. During pride weekend, they had free entry if you wore pride colors, and during national climbing day, they also hosted an event too.
This place is definitely worth trying
