Tucked away in a traditional NYC brownstone on West 24th Street, the Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Center has been serving the city's Yoga community since 1964. Run by a volunteer staff and dedicated to the aim of sharing the knowledge of Yoga with all who come, the center offers not only drop-in classes for all levels but also various workshops and courses on everything from beginner Yoga to Yogic philosophy, along with many others.
The center is the perfect place to take a break from a busy NYC lifestyle to find peace and joy in the classical Yoga teachings. After closely observing the lifestyles and needs of people in the West, Swami Vishnudevananda noted that the ancient wisdom of Yoga can be synthesized into five basic principles, which can easily be incorporated into our own lifestyles to provide the foundation for healthy living.

This course builds on the foundation laid in our Yoga I course and gives the opportunity to build up a solid practice, including all the basic postures and breathing exercises. Emphasis is placed on holding postures longer and making smooth transitions between postures. Some variations of the basic postures are introduced.

Booked an online class last night.Logged into zoom this. morning 8 am, waited for half hour, Tecaher never showed up, most likely because I was the only one signed up. I sent an email asking what was going on, they said oh he might just be late..
After they disappeared , nobody contacted me, and obviously they kept the money I paid.

This is a wonderful place to practice traditional hatha yoga. I had been doing yoga for 10 years and felt that my practice had really stagnated. Then I went to a Sivananda class and things opened up for me that had never been accessible before. The center is a part of an international organization with a rich lineage of teachers passing down the traditions of ancient India. At Sivananda you can not only become a master of your body, but also a master of your mind. They teach you the real yoga, of which the physical practice of yoga is only a part. I've been to the centers in NYC and SF as well

Sivananda Yoga Center is more than just a yoga center - it's a community, a home away from home. Sivananda Yoga Center NYC changed my life in such a positive direction. The authenticity and the depth of the Sivananda yoga practice (for body, mind, & soul) are what I appreciate most about this practice.

I have been making the trek to Sivananda in Chelsea from the upper east side for many years because its truly a rare gem in the city. There are a ton of yoga studios in the city but this is the only one that offers classic/traditional hatha yoga classes, satsang with kirtan, and a whole host of workshops geared toward helping us live healthier and happier lives. The moment you walk into the studio you feel the heaviness of everyday life just lift. Its where I go to center and balance myself!

Loved the place loved the staff loved the class. If you’re looking for classical Hatha yoga and an ashram-like atmosphere this is the place for you. Clean and punctual, I had a very nice experience. You might not like it if you are really advanced but than it’s also yoga to go back to basics from time to time. 😌🙏

I have been going to the Sivananda Yoga Center for some time now. This is really a wonderful studio with great teachers. Its ran purely by volunteers which was very inspiring to me when I found out how dedicated everyone was. It's in the middle of Chelsea but once you walk in you totally forget you're in NYC! Quiet and serene energy. I came here at a time where I really needed to heal and bring spirituality into my life and this was a perfect fit. They offer many courses on Yoga, meditation and philosophy so I really recommend this for people looking to dive deep into their yoga practice. There

With a busy NYC life, Sivananda is a great place to re-energize! I really like how the class instructors explain the benefits of the yoga pose’s and gave great tips on how to improve my personal yoga practice after the class.
To my surprise, they offer vegetarian meals on certain days of the week (Delicious !!!) Myself, staff members, and people from class had dinner in the Garden.
Oh, one more thing, I met “Rama” the cat!
Thanks, Sivananda, see you soon

My experience at this center was wonderful. Teachers are very patient and teaching proper posture and breathing is key. I highly recommend this center to anyone from beginners to advanced. Ample classes available to fit most schedules. And the facility smells like oatmeal cookies to me. They also have a kitchen where they teach how to cook healthy, nutritious and delicious vegetarian meals. Always ready to visit there..Haha.
I moved to Long Island and I wish I could find a place like that one here. Highly recommend it.

I've started practicing yoga in 1998. In 1999 I moved to NYC and I had tried different places, types of yoga and methodologies. By far Sivananda is the best one for me, because it encompasses everything. The 5 points: exercise, breathing, relaxation, diet and meditation/positive thinking. Starting to practice Sivananda, it was a turning point in my life. I'm extremely grateful for it.
The center in NYC is amazing. Nice classrooms, great atmosphere, excellent teachers.
On Sundays there's a yoga class at 4:00 pm and the satsang at 6:00 pm; meditation, mantras and a lecture. After the satsang everyone

Fantastic, traditional yoga center. More than just a yoga studio. It's a beautiful, authentic yogic community where you can get a strong foundation for your yoga practice. Great for beginner's. The Sivananda Yoga and Vedanta Center has been serving NYC in Chelsea for over 50 years! The first Saturday of every month offers a FREE open house and their are FREE satsangs (meditation and chanting) every Wednesday and Sunday! I highly recommend the four week beginner's course. It can't be beat. Thorough, intimate, and super cheap.
