Hands On Physical Therapy
While the primary focus is on physical treatment, I also offer emotional support and the healing power of a peaceful setting. Patients who are highly motivated can make progress here even after disappointments elsewhere. You will find me willing to listen, to help you slow down, and to see you as an integrated whole rather than a collection of symptoms.

Most people receive very little information from their schooling to help them understand their body's messages when they are subtle. Too often, pain becomes the wake up call telling us something needs to change because we're moving through the world in a way that makes us hurt. I see myself as an educator and a guide.
Services
Due to my genetics and some mistakes in my early dance training techniques, I needed a hip replacement in the summer of 2006. This has given me particular insight into this common surgery and it's aftermath. If you have any questions about whether my work would be helpful for your particular issue, please don't hesitate to contact me.
I am a student of movement, my own and yours. I will guide your discovery of how your movement patterns influence your comfort and function. At a time when insurers are demanding a "quick fix" from physical therapy, I am committed to lasting results, which come from seeing the body as a unified whole.
When left untreated, minor pains that occur during or after a repetitive activity such as computer use, can escalate into a condition known as Repetitive Strain Injury. This syndrome involves one or more areas of pain including the neck, shoulder, arm and/or hand due to nerve compression or joint strain.
Edie taught me how to overcome a lifetime of wear and tear that ultimately led to my back going out during non-strenuous movements. She was able to offer me the skills to rehabilitate my body where many others had not. Edie's knowledge of the body and its functioning are exceptional and her ability to guide me through the challenging, complex, and often frustrating tasks of rehabilitating my twisted body are second to none.
If you need to cancel an appointment for any reason, please call my office at, 510-451-5560 by 8:00 AM on the previous business day to avoid the full charge. If I am able to schedule another person in that time slot, I will not charge you. However, when cancellations are last minute, I am not often able to fill them.

I echo the reviews I read on yelp. I read them all carefully when I was looking for a new PT to help with really chronic back issues & sciatica. I now recommend Edie to anyone who needs PT -- she can't see everyone, but anyone who can she her...should!

There's no short version to my story, but if you're in pain or dealing with a chronic issue, you're probably ok with the long version. I have a number of lower back issues -- herniations, stenosis, and general degeneration issues. I've had them on and off for 10 years. They tend to "show up" and create sciatic

Edie is an excellent physical therapist and I am so grateful I found her on Yelp. On our first visit a few months ago I was in serious pain and could barely walk (re-ocurring lower back injury from college) - after 48 hours I had much needed relief. She is extremely knowledgeable, patient and HELPFUL. Her handouts, drawings, and custom patient packet allows the patient to have a fool proof way of 'what to do' should this happen again. Truly magic hands. Thank you Edie!

I have been seeing Edie Murphy for many years, and owe a good part of my physical well-being to her. She explains, she has insight, and she will fit me in when there's an acute need. Thank you!

I've had chronic pains for the majority of my life, have seen many massage therapists, two bodywork specialists, four chiropractors and two physical therapists. Hands down, Edie is the best, with a vastly deeper understanding of how the body works than all the others I've tried. She identified my core problem within a few seconds of looking at me, something no one else had ever seen! When I first went to her, I could not put on my boots or tie them without some serious pain, I couldn't run, and generally had hip/butt/leg/ankle pain 24/7. Within two months of daily exercises prescribed

I had an injury in what I thought was my left lat but, after seeing Edie, discovered it was in my shoulder. She looks at the body as a whole to find out what is wrong, teaches you how to fix it and even supplies pictures and step by step instructions for each exercise.

My nagging problem is now healing and I am able to do things that previously caused pain. I would highly recommend Edie to anyone in any kind of bodily discomfort...don't wait until you're body is ruined to fix it!

Being a yoga teacher, i have assembled a pretty impressive crew of physical therapists, body workers, chiropractors & healers. when i had tendinitis in my elbows and shoulders, everyone pretty much agreed that it was from my posture and sitting at a desk....but it was only edie who took it up a notch, and figured out it was because of my walk. it was nagging for months, but with her help, it cleared up in just a couple weeks. she is truly amazing, and should be the starting point to troubleshoot any issues you are having with your body.

If it were not for Edie, I would still be suffering knee pain. I was misdiagnosed at the emergency room and Edie recommended an MRI and she was correct about the nature of my problem. Her years of experience are so valuable.I was treated with respect, care and concern that exceeded anything I have ever experienced before.
She has so many tools she can access that my recovery was faster than I thought.
I would recommend Edie to anyone.

If you have an orthopedic problem, especially one that just won't go away, you should run, not walk, to see Edie. She has been helping me on and off for 25 year and I don't know what I would have done without her. Last summer I dislocated my shoulder. Because I now live in Sonoma County I tried a couple other PTs first, but I wasn't making all that much progress, so last week I drove to Oakland (an hour each way) to see her. I will do it again next month for a followup. If there is any PT on the planet who can help you, it's Edie.

Edie Murphy has changed my life and is fabulous! She believes in working in small increments so you remain comfortable as your body improves.

She is patient, knowledgable, explains things extremely well and sends you home with drawings, instructions and encouragement. She realizes you'll need things repeated and explains the physiology and reasons you need to do something so you understand it fully.

She's a gem and I'm telling all my friends how much she has changed my life and made me more comfortable in just a few sessions and looking forward to her improving my quality of

My general medical doctor recommended I come here for therapy regarding a terrible back issue. After the first treatment I felt better.
Ms. Murphy taught me exercises that helped to stabilize and strengthen my core muscles. She has helped me with a recent hamstring/gluteal muscle strain that seemed to never recover. She has taught me how to move and function in a helpful manner that helps me to maintain optimum health. I HIGHLY recommend this facility which is organized and clean with all the required equipment to facilitate the bodies correct functioning.
