Services
Mark was raised an Army Brat and lived all over the United States. He began his Martial Arts training at the age of 8, studying Tae Kwon Do while living in Honolulu, Hawaii. While serving in the U.S Army his interest in Martial Arts was revived after watching Royce Gracie defeat much larger opponents in the Ultimate Fighting Championships.
Fairfax Jiu Jitsu offers a complete Brazilian Jiu Jitsu program that begins with solid fundamentals and incorporates technical instruction, live drilling and sparring, and conditioning. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a practical martial art that is very applicable to self-defense situations and is a fantastic way for kids to stay fit.

I started training jiu jitsu here a little over a year and half ago as a guy in his late 30s with no background in martial arts whatsoever.
I decided to check out this place initially because of the reviews and I feel it’s definitely lived up to the hype. I love it here. All of the students here are really friendly, helpful, and were welcoming from day one.
Coaches Mark, Sam, and (sometimes) Bill, are all really cool guys. They’re also all very knowledgeable, helpful, and each have different teaching styles, body types, training backgrounds, and perspectives.
The facility is very clean and

I highly recommend this school! Since day one, everyone that I've interacted with (other students and coaches) have been incredibly welcoming. I think that aspect speaks to the type of environment they're trying to create, which is an environment that's all inclusive. Compared to the last school I was at, where I trained in Krav Maga, the environment at Fairfax Jiu Jitsu is less intimidating, which I find appealing for students who may have never trained before. The coaches are knowledgeable and they don't just show you "moves". They take the time to explain scenarios where you might find a certain

I have been attending Fairfax Jiu Jitsu for well over 6 months now, and I love this place. Everyone is super friendly and always willing to help. The coaches are extremely knowledgeable and makes every class super fun to attend. You just have to attend the trial class to see what I am talking about. Highly recommend FJJ to anyone who is looking get a start on Jiu Jitsu!

Training Jiu-Jitsu again after 6 years of break due to having kids was an easy choice, especially my 5 year old son wanted to train as well. I did some lengthy research and chose FJJ to continue training, due to its distance near to our house (there are two gyms closer from our house) but moreover, recommendations and knowledge of the coaches. I am… glad that I made right decision; gym was spacious, atmosphere was very family-like and friendly, I felt immediately part of the members within first couple weeks. Techniques that I forgot and failed to retain came back quickly in result of technical

Fairfax Jiu Jitsu was not the first gym I came to when I was looking for a place to train Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, but it was easy to see from the get-go that it would be the last stop on my list. At all of the other gyms I tried I felt like an outsider, like the ‘new guy’. At Fairfax Jiu Jitsu, I was greeted by several students who introduced themselves and showed genuine interest in meeting me as soon as I sat down on the bench before my trial class.
This culture, without a doubt, trickles down from the positive team spirit and lightheartedness that Coach Sam Kim and Coach Mark Jones emulate

I have been training Muay Thai here for about 2 years. It is a great place to learn authentic Muay Thai. Our trainer has been going to Thailand for well over a decade to learn this stuff from decorated Thai fighters and trainers.
You can learn at your own pace. If you just want to train casually and learn the fundamentals, you can do that here. If you are more serious and want to compete, then you will be pushed and given a proper fight camp.

This is an excellent school. The coaches are very knowledgeable and experienced. Fellow students are always friendly and helpful. The environment is welcoming to everyone, no matter the skill level.  I started with a free class with zero experience, signed up, and earned my blue belt in 2 years. I would definitely recommend FJJ to anyone looking to learn and train Jiu Jitsu!

My son Kaiden joined 1yr and 4 months ago he was not as athletic as most other kids his age, he cried at his first second and third class, but the coaches helped him through his tough times and this weekend he won gold at Copa Virginia winning all his fights without losing a single point, in one year he went from a kid who would struggle to do 5 push ups to a gold medal winner, the love and respect all the coaches show to all the kids is amazing, and they sure have helped shape Kaidens future in a positive way, finally technique is everything in BJJ and having travelled with my son to different

For the longest time I couldn't ever convince my son to join a martial art class. We let him join a Tae Kwon Do class and there was never any sort of interest for him. It felt like a chore from beginning to end. When we came here I crossed my fingers and hoped for the best.

From his first free trial day he absolutely loved it. He seems to retain the moves and has been slowly improving each week. Sensei Mark and assistants are great at instructing the kids and reinforcing moves of the week. They practice one hourly sessions 4x a week. All kids are respectful with the sensei Mark, all coaches

Both of my boys (7 yo and 8 yo) train BJJ here. I am so glad I found this honest gem near my house. I did do extensive research before committing here. I did not want a place where you have to pay for belt testing. No up sale here either. You really have to earn your belt. You advance to next level only when they think you ready. I suggest you to stay far away from martial art gyms where belt testing fee is required. That is completely BS. Unfortunately there are a lot in this area so be aware. Membership fee is also extremely reasonable. All the coaches here (head instructor Mark and Sam, Sarah

My 7 year old son joined Fairfax Jiu Jitsu in May 2018. I was very hesitant at first because I had no idea what I was signing my son up for and what this can do for him besides self defense. Here we are, 4 months later, every penny spent in this class is absolutely work it. Hands down the best kids program. The coaches not only teach the kids martial arts but also help them develop skills and strong characters through the Forge Character program. Coach Sam, Coach Mark and the other trainers are absolutely amazing with kids. My son loves to train and always look forward to going to class everyday

I joined FJJ late January 2017, here i am a year later still at the gym training 4-5 times a week. The thing that makes this gym special is the family atmosphere, within a week i felt as if i was apart of the team and started hanging out with teammates outside the gym. The coaches are amazing and have taught me a lot about coaching which i use for coaching different sports like basketball. This is the perfect gym for adults or kids to try if you are new to martial arts, the people are fun and make you want to come in everyday.

Literally one of the best decisions I could have ever made.

I was looking to learn bjj and I walked into FJJ as my first stop on academy hunting. I didn't need to visit any other academies. The culture in what FJJ teaches is very team an individual oriented. Literally some of the best instructors you could ask for. Even if it's a little out of your way, like it is for me, FJJ is so worth it.

Honestly in the time I've been here this place has become a home for me, and I hope to learn from Sam and Mark for many years. They've helped me not just fall in love with bjj, but helped

I have been an athlete all of my life playing just about every sport involving some sort of ball, but in terms of martial arts, I am a newbie.

This gym was my second (and probably final) attempt at getting into Brazilian jiu-jitsu. I had previously taken a handful of introductory lessons at another gym in the area, but my experience was not great. When you are an absolute beginner, the social anxiety of drilling with strangers who are also much more experienced than you can be daunting. While I felt like an outsider at my first gym, Fairfax Jiu Jitsu has always been a friendly and welcoming

I have been training at Fairfax Jiu Jitsu for about 2.5 years, and I can say that I have found my training family. Not only is the instruction top notch (multiple medal winners at local/regional/national level tournaments), but the culture is excellent.

The owners, Mark and Sam, have developed a system where new students are recognized as integral parts of our BJJ community, and are encouraged along their journey. Truly awesome!

Since starting at FJJ, I have moved farther away from the academy, yet continue to make the drive. FJJ is home for me, and I can't see myself training anywhere

Almost 3 years after randomly spotting it in a Sherdog thread, I'm still a happy camper in FJJ's MMA program, and it's hard to find fault with it. The stuff you'd expect from a quality school - a coaching staff as passionate about their sport as they are knowledgeable and able to convey said knowledge, ample and well-kept training areas, and always respectful but competitive training partners - is in no shortage here. To find yourself sparring against individuals with years of experience (including pro and amateur fighters) can be daunting at the outset, and the degree of effort
