iYoga Delray Beach
Colleen Gallagher was the first Iyengar instructor in Palm Beach County and has mentored numerous teachers in the process of becoming certified Iyengar yoga instructors in Florida and throughout the country. Iyengar Yoga is based on the teachings of B.K.S. Iyengar, yoga master and the author of the classic yoga treatise, "Light on Yoga".

His dedicated personal practice and over 65 years of teaching have produced significant innovations in the teaching of yoga. These innovations have now become established and known as Iyengar Yoga. The use of props and attention to the individual's needs is an important innovation of Iyengar yoga. At iYoga Delray Beach, this means that you will be introduced to a safe, systematic progression of yoga postures that will develop your abilities.

WHAT IS A MENTOR? Colleen's role as a mentor is to get to know you, your practice and prepare and guide you toward certification. You will expand your knowledge of the yoga asana and learn how you how to be a very good teacher. Colleen will support you through this time of self discovery and personnel growth in order for you to reach your highest potential.
Her principal teacher has been Patricia Walden, Boston as well as traveling to Pune, India numerous times to study at the Iyengar Institute. She was the first Iyengar instructor in Palm Beach County and has mentored numerous teachers in the process of becoming certified Iyengar yoga instructors. Colleen has a patient, encouraging teaching style, combining a hard work ethic with a sense of fun and lightness to deliver a meaningful class.
The certification process was an enjoyable experience with Colleen guiding me as my mentor. She is patient and uses a step by step method to gradually prepare me. As I was studying with her, I was observing her passion for teaching ensuring the safety of the students and always finding solutions for every injury, struggle and stiffness.
As a long time yoga instructor in Delray Beach I have met seniors who have trouble standing and then seniors that can easily kick up in to a handstand. There is this 89 year old woman who attends class with little effort slides right into humamanasana (the splits)! She's what I like to call a Level 4 student.
Padmasana translates "that which is born out of the mud". The pose is done with our feet on top of our legs, like a lotus - strong and firmly rooted down under the water. In this pose, energy ascends, opening mind and heart to reveal cosmic beauty. Thus, like a lotus, from our root, we reach upward to blossom in the sunlight.

Never having done Yoga I was a little hesitant at first, especially since I am more of a cardio athlete. But all my fears were put to rest when I walked into Laura’s class. She was warm, patient and taught me how much more capable I was than I gave myself credit for.
And Jill’s rope class really brought me to another level. I actually feel limber and more balanced than I have in years. Can’t say enough to express my satisfaction and appreciation.

This is one studio where the insturctors help you. They align you and watch your moves and provide assistance and corrections so you won't hurt yourself. Have been to many studios where the teachers just call out moves and say, "Great job," without even looking at you. Iyoga teaches and assists!

Colleen has a deep commitment and love of yoga and people. She has patiently worked with my stiff older body to help me find joy and dignity in life and Iyengar yoga. I have rarely met or learned under a more wonderful, gracious or knowledgeable individual.

Iyoga Delray Beach is the absolute best Iyengar studio I have ever studied in. Colleen Gallagher owner/teacher is a fountain of knowledge, an incredible teacher, compassionate and thoughtful, exacting , offering individualized attention in class. I have been studying on zoom with Stephanie Dodge, another fantastic Iyengar teacher, who guides us on zoom in a full bodied always inspiring and challenging practice, with the deep roots of yoga philosophy interwoven in every class. There are many other great teachers guiding beginners. There are also classes teaching correct prop use. The rope wall class

Iyengar teachers are very well-trained and give detailed and clear alignment cues; the teachers here are no exception. The studio is small and welcoming. the parking easy and plentiful. Drop-in prices are a little higher than other local studios but the quality of Iyengar instruction could explain that. I love the style and recommend everyone try it at least once. It's not "power" yoga in the western sense, but definitely requires strength of body and mind for the attention to detail and mindful pace.
