Shaolin Self Defense Centers is a family-run and operated business that began back in 1992. It is a place where respect is earned, learned and given. Our main goal is to bring our students to their fullest training potential. Each student is trained as an individual and evaluated on their own level-not what the other students in class can do.
Upon entering the dojo, you will be greeted either by one of the owners or one of their family members. Sensei Lori, his wife, began training at the age of seventeen. She teaches the fitness kickboxing classes and children classes. Currently, she holds the rank of 2nd Degree black belt. All of our instructors start out as students and work their way up through the ranks to become assistants and eventually full instructors.

Let us take this opportunity to let you know what our goals are, as martial arts instructors, as they pertain to the children of our community. We've found the most important characteristics that can be taught to our children are self-esteem, respect and self-discipline. If these traits are not instilled at an early age, it might be difficult for them to function in society the way we would like them to.
The Shaolin Temple was first built around 495 ad, by the Chinese emperor Hsino Wen. It was in the first great Shaolin Temple that Buddharama, a sixth century monk first introduced Buddhism and a form of meditation and fighting techniques. In addition, he introduced a form of breathing exercises based upon animal movements designed to strengthen and condition the body as well as the mind.
Pee wee classes encompass the ages 4 to 6 years old. In this class, our goal is to develop their skills in the following areas: balance, coordination, concentration and focus. We incorporate drills and techniques through the use of the martial arts to strengthen the aforementioned areas. The students will learn combonations, forms, grappling and sparring.
Adult classes encompass the ages 17+. In this class, our goal is to give the student a full understanding and love for the martial arts we teach. Through bag work, mitt owrk and drills, we will help to keep the student fit and healthy. The student will learn combonations, kempos, forms (hand and weapons), grappling and sparring.

I tried a single 1 lesson there and frankly I wasn't very impressed. The instructor proceeded to brag about his fake vaccination card for a few minutes and then held up the class for a decent length to brag about movies.
Knowing Long Island, that's a probably more up their alley. But I'd throw up this warning sign for those like me.
