Berkeley Orthodontics was established by Dr. Gerald Nelson (currently the Chairman of the Department of Orthodontics at UCSF) in 1968 in a very small office across the street from Alta Bates Hospital in South Berkeley.
When Dr. Michael Meyer, who is also a Clinical Professor at UCSF, joined him in 1972, they decided to treat patients collaboratively rather than the usual format in which each doctor has his or her own practice within the same office space.Today, the team format continues to be one of the distinguishing features of Berkeley Orthodontics.

All of our doctors are graduates of premier orthodontic residency programs in the USA, and several are Clinical Professors at the Division of Orthodontics in the School of Dentistry at the University of California at San Francisco. Not only do they consistently expand their knowledge of research and treatment techniques, they are trusted to impart that knowledge to others as true experts in the field of orthodontics.
Elba is a graduate of San Francisco City College and Heald Business College. She has been in the orthodontic profession since 1980; most of these years have been with Berkeley & Orinda Orthodontics. When not at work, you will find her enjoying long walks around the San Francisco Bay and enjoying precious time with her family and beautiful grandchildren.
Orthodontics is so much more than straightening crooked teeth. Orthodontists are dentists with special training in the treatment of bite abnormalities, and many of our doctors are experts in craniofacial anomalies. This expertise makes them able to help patients who suffer from severe jaw and facial structure problems.
We are passionate about orthodontics. In addition to our teaching mission, our doctors are active participants and leaders in many professional organizations in dentistry and orthodontics. We all believe that through active participation in organized dentistry and orthodontics we can ensure the health of our specialty, which in turn will benefit the current and future generations of our patients.
It is important to find the right orthodontist for your needs and comfort. The quality of your smile and bite is at stake, not to mention the quality of your experience over the course of your treatment. Here are some factors you may want to consider as you research orthodontists. For more information, the American Association of Orthodontists website is an excellent resource for learning about your orthodontic choices.
