You may not be aware but debit card fraud is a cost to you, whether you're the actual victim or not. Though the loss doesn't come out of your pocket directly, it costs your credit union more than $100,000 a year that could be used for your benefit and the benefit of other members. Guys please be aware! This is a great service for low interest rate loans, but anything with average to do business with this company is a nightmare!! My debit card expired so I called and asked if they were going to send me a new one and they said yes, this was 10 days ago and they just mailed it yesterday. Literally 9 days after I called and of course I had to call back. I just moved from Los Angeles to Georgia and am trying to register my car, because have my loan is through them I need a permission to transfer my title. For 2 months I have been calling and emailing the Lending department to assist me with an Escrow analysis and no one has returned my calls or emails. I find their office to be incredibly unorganized. Requests to have my property taxes paid bi-annually always turn into 3 different email requests/updates until I receive a reply.
Their mortgage rates are unbeatable and their understanding of a 1099 based income are what keeps me here, but that's it.

My husband and I have used AFCU for as long as I can remember. We are based in NYC, so there are huge advantages: we can use the AFCU ATMs located in McDonald's all over the City charge-free and we can visit the office on 46th street any time to do our banking business in person with an actual human being. By keeping the minimum $100 in our savings account, we get free checking. We have access online to the easy-to-use website. AND, we can make deposits and take care of other banking business via the phone app, which works really well.

I have been with this bank for several years after using a traditional bank and having my identity stolen twice. I switched to a credit union to avoid this. Well I got my identity stolen again. This time tho unlike every other bank I have worked with in the past I have to PAY to use a notary to sign my fraud statement since I live in LA and there is only one branch office here and its too far to drive and then I have to snail mail it. Not a single bank I have used has required me to jump thru so many hoops to return money that was stolen from me. I have my card in hard so they're security

I can happily report that I've been a member of the AFCU for over 30 years, beginning with a small deposit which was logged by hand in an old-fashioned passbook. At that time, a single, adult FEMALE was precluded from obtaining a credit card and shut out of other forms of credit. Any access to credit was the purview of her husband, father, or other MALE overseer, even though she may be of age and gainfully employed. The Dark Ages? Not so long ago.

UPDATE: You've failed to address the essence of my review. 1) I've provided details to your board members where an actors situation working on a low paying contract would allow them a free account at Citibank, chase, BOA, etc and they'd receive a fee from AFCU 2) get a system in place that doesn't charge fees until the transaction actually settles. 3) stop running a member focused financial institution that doesn't actually address the fact that many actors can't keep an account without fees.

I was a customer for about 9 years. I had to leave the bank because of an error on their part over a weekend and they have NO CUSTOMER SERVICE on the weekends, so I couldn't rectify the mistake until Monday, and it took them until Wednesday to get it fixed. I was traveling at the time and this caused extreme inconvenience. The costumer service reps that I spoke to seemed to care less. "Oh well, sorry." was the tone I had from them. After nearly ten years I have had to more or less close my account due to egregious errors that the CU REFUSES to remedy or acknowledge. In short your money is not safe here. This one is going to be long but I feel I must warn others before they consider banking here.

Having been a Bank of America customer for years,I can honestly say that having switched to AFCU has been the smartest decision I've ever made. I could never find an ATM when I needed one, my account kept getting compromised, leading me to have to wait for a new card being sent to me every few months. Not to mention their support of the Dakota Pipeline Access. So, being eligible to join AFCU, I did it as soon as I could, and have never regretted it. This morning I received a phone call from Actor's Federal Credit Union in New York, stating that my savings account has a negative amount due of over $300. I informed the Rep that I haven't received a statement for that account since 2011 and assumed it had been closed. She informed me that as a member I am required to keep a minimum balance of $100 in the savings account. If I do not maintain this balance then I am charged a fee of $5 per month and another $1.99 fee (not sure what that's for). I was dismayed, but not surprised, to see the reviews on here detailing negative experiences with customer service. I am sincerely very disappointed to have to write this review, as I was looking very forward to being a member of the credit union for years to come. I am currently waiting to hear back from the supervisory committee regarding my case - in the meantime, I am sharing my experience with other potential customers.

Story:
I cashed a check through my mobile app. The money became available right away and I threw the check away. Someone found the check, wrote their name on the front and back of it, cashed it four days later. Fraud. Classic case. What happened next? MY bank Actors FCU took the money OUT of MY account even though the person cashed the check days later. Instead of investigating, instead of assisting me in anyway they said "it was not their problem". TD bank who issued the check, is doing what they can even though I am not

Happy to update my review. Much better customer service in Los Angeles and the new iPhone app is reliable and easy to use. Happy I stuck it out with Actors FCU. Also, remember this is a credit union not a bank. You can't expect the same level of reliability & services. It "pays" to have a credit card or another financial backup if you're keeping your cash in any credit union.

I am happy to update the previous review with a report that I had a pleasant, concerned and proactive exchange with the Actors FCU Business Manager, Steve, this morning after he wrote in response to my previous Yelp review and distressing experience with the credit union.
His written reply addressed my concerns and acknowledged my frustration and encouraged me to contact him by phone, which I did.
After our lengthy conversation, I am assured that he, the ActorsFCU directors and staff are committed to addressing the remaining issues and things will be resolved expeditiously on my behalf.

I am an actor (SAG) and writer (WGA-E) and have been a member of the Actors Federal Credit Union for almost 4 years and have had nothing but good experiences.
The biggest selling points for me are the eMax$ high interest savings account, the convenience of having ATMs in McDonald's everywhere in NYC and at all 7/11 locations all over the country, and the full-service branches in both NYC and Los Angeles where I can get friendly, helpful customer service in person from people who know my face and my name no matter which coast I'm on.
The online banking and bill pay services are basic

I like the idea of a credit union, but this one is really frustrating.
Depositing checks is next to impossible. I understand the hours the office is open, but the iPhone app crashes every time I try to deposit a check, the scan feature on the website does not work, and the list of deposit centers that was poorly out of date now won't even load. My only option is to mail in my checks which takes almost two weeks to clear.

The worst customer service ever. The opposite of what a credit union should be. They are so stuck in their rules that they can't even begin to give good customer service. And a 24-48 hour turnaround on an urgent request is NOT responsive. We had business accounts here that were an obvious challenge for them. Whatever you do, don't open a business account. Hate to say it, but we're back with our big bank and happy again now that we can actually get some business done.
