As a leader in Healing Environment Planning and Design, we are deeply committed to the pursuit of thoughtful, life-enhancing design. Our projects range in size from large scale, Multi-Campus Master Plans, Hospitals and Medical Office Buildings to small-scale, private spaces such as Healing Gardens, Meditation Courtyards and Rooftop Terraces.

Macdonald Environmental Planning, established in 1982 by Laurel Macdonald Bonnell, is a leading environmental planning / landscape architectural firm with offices in Portland and Bend, Oregon. Throughout our history, our sensitivity to the natural systems has been, and continues to be, woven into each and every project; be it a Mixed-Use or Affordable Housing project, a Memory Care Garden, or a Medical Center campus.

It's the largest new (medical clinic) project for the Oregon region this year, so there's quite a bit of excitement around it. You don't get to build a greenfield medical office very often anymore, so it's kind of exciting to do that. This garden community, originally opened in 1960, faced several challenges contributing to declining occupancy.
Project involvements range in scale from system-wide and regional medical campus healing environment master plans, medical center development master plans, and phased healing environments on expansion projects to detailed entrance plazas, healing gardens, meditation courtyards and rooftop terraces.
Macdonald Environmental Planning, PC has a long standing record for designing sustainable landscape elements into affordable housing projects. We are proud of this reputation and we will continue to provide environmentally-friendly solutions for every project we are involved with.

Our recent involvements with the Vancouver Housing Authority, Home Forward, and Salem Housing Authority with multiple project renovations and other new projects with Northwest Housing Alternatives, Central City Concern, Portland Community Reinvestment, Columbia Non-Profit and Home First Development have kept our team engaged and current with housing trends.
Mixed-Use and Market Rate projects bring together a combination of retail/restaurant, community services, and market rate housing within single projects. This creates a challenging canvas for delivering a diversity of experiences and services for the community and residents.

Design of successful public spaces and gathering areas, ease of access to retail/restaurants, and the blending of the built environment with the natural systems offers remarkable opportunities to build sustainable projects over time.
Our success is derived by actual project outcomes such as the American Lake VA-Community Living Center, Portland Building Green Roof, and the Multnomah County Building Green Roof which received an ASLA People's Choice Award. As a principal, Laurel Macdonald Bonnell brings a wealth of knowledge on a wide variety of stormwater and environmental planning.
