Fearless learners are free to indulge their curiosity without arbitrary constraints, free to explore their world without hesitation, and free to question assumptions without the fear of being judged, shut down, or redirected. IDS students grow into independent, original and collaborative thinkers who aren't confined to examining things in conventional ways.
We prepare students to lead fulfilling lives in a world that will require them to be intellectually ready and distinctively skilled to address challenges, solve problems, and invent new approaches. At IDS, we work to remove fear from the equation. Exploring interests and curiosities is encouraged. The result is preschool, elementary and middle school students who are fearless at school.

Services
With the return of our students to campus this Fall, we are happy to announce the return of our in-person campus tours! For 60 years, The Independent Day School has defined educational excellence in the greater Hartford and New Haven area. At IDS, robust academics, personalized instruction and an emphasis on Fearless Learning come together to create an environment where curiosity thrives, creativity abounds, and anything is possible.
We host Open House events and tours throughout the course of the year. Additionally, parents and students are welcome to schedule individual informational campus tours at their convenience. Once an application has been completed, applicants are invited to spend a day visiting classes, meeting current IDS students, and getting to know our amazing teachers.
The Independent Day School serves children who demonstrate a natural curiosity to learn, and who have average to above average intelligence. Programs are designed to be enriching and challenging as well as supportive. The goal of the admission process is to determine whether our curriculum and programs will meet the needs of your child(ren) and the expectations of your family.
While the value of an IDS experience is clear, affording an independent school tuition can be a financial challenge. This challenge can become even more daunting when families are faced with affording tuition for more than one child. As such, IDS is committed to working with families to close the gap between what they can afford and the cost of an IDS education.
IDS grants are awarded regardless of financial need and renew automatically as long as the conditions of the grant continue to be met. On the occasion of its 50th anniversary, IDS initiated a special grant program to honor the historic relationships among three extraordinary communities. The Independent Day School Founders Grant was created to make IDS more affordable for Wesleyan and Choate faculty and staff families.

I left the school last year. It was a good decision although I had a awesome time with the faculty and grew up with them. I really wouldn't send my kid here. I don't think they make the curriculum is made well because if somebody is stuck on something that everybody is sound on they kinda linger on it and waists time. The motto is fearless learning but I was sometimes afraid to raise my hand because I was teased or given a dirty look by other kids.
