Our owner and the most seasoned technician, Gene Helmkamp, graduated from SIUC with his Associate's Degree in Automotive Technology. After serving in the Army Reserves, he also earned his ASE Master Technician and Advanced Technician certifications. In 1967, Gene and his wife, Janet opened the shop where it stands and still operates today.
Helmkamp is a great vehicle repair place. They installed a new rear axle and pinion seal for me at about half of what I was quoted at another local repair shop. And they did a fantastic job. Horrible place ripped me off. Never gave me an estimate even though I called 3 days in a row, was there several times. Never gave me a price, not even a ball park, never even told me how much the parts or labor or combined were. They just gave me a bill for over 5 grand. Replaced parts that I didnt ask them to do. Nor authorized them. Definitely going to court ! Stay far away from them ! The circled part on the list of parts that were unnecessary, over 1200 in parts alone plus the labor to put them on. Stay far away from them.

This place charged us $1300.00 to help us diagnose why our water in our RV was not getting hot. I understand they had time in diagnosing what was wrong but that is RIDICULOUS!!!!
I do not recommend them. Do yourself a favor and go somewhere else!! I have NEVER been charged that much even by the dealership! WOW is all I have to say...
Just because they have been in business along time... doesn't mean you stick people.
