Blepharoplasty is a surgery typically done to remove redundant skin on the upper eyelid, which is referred to as dermatochalasia. Such changes are typically the normal result of aging, but can have a hereditary component. If the excess skin obstructs vision, which typically occurs when the excess upper lid skin rests on the eyelashes, a upper blepharoplasty will normally improve overhead vision significantly.
The tear outflow tract starts with two small openings called puncta that are in the inner portion of you upper and lower eyelids. Each of these openings leads into a small tube call the canaliculus which in turn empties into the lacrimal sac, which is between the inside corner of your eye and nose.
The constellation of eye problems that go along with diseases of the thyroid gland goes by many names, to include Graves' disease, thyroid related immune orbitopathy (TRIO), and thyroid related orbitopathy (TRO). This is a disorder of the immune system, not a primary thyroid problem. Some patients in fact have completely normal thyroid hormone studies.
Glaucoma is a disease that damages the nerve in the back of your eye called the optic nerve. The optic nerve is responsible for sending the signals to your brain that enable you to see. If left untreated, glaucoma will cause a slow but steady loss of vision. Glaucoma is typically caused by an increase in pressure inside your eye.
