Carlos Gracie established the first Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Academy in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 1925. At the time, Carlos and his brothers were teaching Japanese Jiu-Jitsu techniques which were taught to Carlos by Japanese immigrant Esai Maeda. Carlos' youngest brother Helio, who due to his small size and fragility, was restricted from practicing the techniques and would spend most of his time observing his older brothers teach.
A private lesson is a one on one training session between the student and FBJJ Head Coach, James Foster. The purpose of these lessons is to focus on the individual needs of each student and to help them develop their own strategies and style. Private lessons are ideal for those who want to drastically improve their technique and conditioning in a short period of time.
Q: How do I get started and what does training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu cost? A: The first step for anyone new to our academy is to schedule and try a free class! This allows you to determine if the training atmosphere and instruction are the right fit prior to making any further commitments. We offer a wide variety of payment options which allows us to provide each student with the plan best suited for their individual training needs and budget.

Today was our, my daughter's and mine, first experience at Foster's. The environment was perfect for beginners, and the coaches were amazing. We are now proud members of the Foster Team.

About Coach Foster: Coach Foster helped save my life. He speaks as a natural leader and motivates you to improve yourself. You will not be insulted, berated, or teased. Coach seems to get along with anyone who acts like a good person. Where other gyms may seek to crush the weak in sparring, he'll help you get better if you put in the effort.
About the mats: The mats are wiped down every time I attend. Everyone is required to sanitize their hands and feet before stepping on. They look clean and well maintained.
The people: It's a naturally diverse and wholesome group. There is no forced diversity

Coach Foster and his wife Amy are incredible and the teaching practice is comprehensive.
Right away, I felt comfortable, challenged and welcome here. You can tell that everyone treats one another like family, even behind the mandatory masks; and indeed this environment is safe, the mats are clean and the people work tirelessly to keep it so. I can't say enough about this place and the people, so I'll just shut up for now, but will check in again, 6 mo to a year out, and should the zombie A.I. alien super-virus not take us, you'll hear how it goes.

Coach Foster and the entire organization are professional, respectful, disciplined and very supportive of newbies. My 7 YO son and I (37 YO) recently started the Jiu Jitsu journey. Neither of us have any martial arts experience. My goals are to improve my agility/fitness and to pursue a hobby outside of my comfort zone. My son loves the classes too, and Coach Foster is a natural teacher for adults and children alike.
I’d say if you’re a newbie and want to give Jiu-Jitsu a shot, look no further than Foster BJJ.

Gorgeous facility paired with patient, top-notch instructors and a humble, welcoming, and ready-to-learn attitude from the students. There's a ton to love about this place. They welcomed this traveller from Chicago with open arms. I very much enjoyed my time here and learned a great deal during my short time there. I'll definitely be back the next time I'm in town! Keep up the great work. Oss!

Great Instruction for Kids and Adults!
Regardless whether you're looking for a place to begin your jiu-jitsu journey or just in town looking for a quality place to train, this is the place to go.
Professor James Foster is a blackbelt under the legendary Giva Santana, he's an accomplished world champion in his own right and most importantly he's one of the most decent human beings I've ever had the opportunity to meet and train with.
Quality details, safe rolls and opportunities to grow can ask be found at Foster Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Amazing academy with amazing people! Professor James Foster is a fantastic teacher who shows excellent technical BJJ knowledge, and knows how to communicate that knowledge down to his students. One thing I absolutely love about this place is that there are no egos, people treat each other with the upmost respect, and everyone cares about the progression of their peers. I had a bad experience with another gym in the area, and after finding Fosters, I realized that there is a big difference in the quality of high level BJJ being taught here. The academy mats are cleaned after every class, and it’s

Not only does Mr Foster provide a well-rounded training program, his students also share in the enthusiasm and camaraderie that he exudes. If you are new like me to BJJ, come by and schedule a free class; it's more than worth it!

My son has only been on three classes (not including the free trial class), well supposed to be four but he missed one class, and I already love this place. I can tell coach Foster is not messing and I like how he teach discipline and self control. I can't wait for more future classes.

I was in Seattle for business and was looking for a good spot to drop in. Everyone had good reviews, so where should I go? I read a review on another fellow traveler that had a good time here, so I decided to call and Instructor Foster answered and was extremely cool on the phone and welcomed my visit!

I got there and was surprised at the size of the place! There were a lot of students and they have a healthy amount of colored belts! It wasn't hard to make friends and drills were great! Lots of places teach moves, but Instr. Foster pushed the concept.

First roll was with Instructor

Amazing gym and people!! I came on Saturday during open mat and when you don't know anyone and you're a white belt from out of town that can be a little awkward. One of their black belts Ben approached me as I was finishing warming up, introduced himself and asked if I wanted to roll. He went easy but allowed me to work my passes and sweeps but kept it interesting. Then I was sitting and watching some others roll when Phil came up and asked if I needed to work on anything. I thought that was amazing and since I needed work on EVERYTHING, we just rolled and he pointed out things he noticed

AWESOME EXPERIENCE Hands down!

I was on a business trip and dropped into Seattle of course with my Gi because being consistent is key to any martial art. I honestly should of called professor Foster ahead of time but I was very excited to be close to many schools cause Southern Maryland has no jiu jitsu school besides my self and those who train with me.

As I walked in I was pretty nervous not sure what to expect but Professor Foster noticed me and walked up with a smile and introduced himself. I explained I was visiting, what school I was from, who my professor was, my rank and I wanted to

My 2 kids (now 5yrs & 7yrs) have been training here for a year. Coach Foster and his team are amazing! They are so great with all the kids. My kids work hard and tell me that "its really hard" sometimes, but never ever want to miss a class. Training here has helped with my sons behavior and attitude and my daughter has become more steady on her two feet and aware of her surroundings. I would highly recommend enrolling your kids here verses any other activity or martial arts.

Been training at FBJJ on and off for over 9 years. Mostly on, but the atmosphere here is one that influences you as a person to become better.
When you step on the mat, who you are really comes out and this place will help you improve that.

Amazing BJJ Academy!

I made the mistake of going to another "school" to train Jiu Jitsu and after about 6 mo. I realized I was in the wrong place. I was left seeking a place that was both technical in its training and that had the right atmosphere for me. After coming in to train for the first night here at Fosters, I knew I was in the right place.

James Foster is an exceptional professor with sharp tact when it comes to teaching BJJ. You can tell that when teaching us, he is drawing from a long history of experience and not getting his info from the internet like some other places

I trained here for a couple months and it was a great experience. Family and career priorities made it difficult for me to continue but I know someday I'll be back. Coach Foster is extremely knowledgable and every instructor treated me with the utmost respect. They have a great 101 class which teaches the fundamentals to people like me with no martial arts experience.
