An eclectic martial arts style combining principles of Karate and Escrima into a well-rounded approach to self-defense was established in 1987 by Mr. Glenn Harmaning. He combined his extensive knowledge of Karate, Kenpo, and Filipino Escrima and Kali into a system which is based on the principles and dynamics of motion and physiology which encompass all the martial arts.
At the A.K.E.A., we believe that the Warrior and the Scholar work together and help each other. One without the other is incomplete. For white belt/black stripe, students are required to read and write a report on Zen in the Martial Arts by Joe Hyams. Under the guidance of such celebrated masters as Ed Parker and the immortal Bruce Lee, Joe Hyams vividly recounts his more than 25 years of experience in the martial arts.
The A.K.E.A. is proud to have been in business in the City of Auburn for over 20 years and can be found participating in many local events. We also host special groups and camps at the School, as well as public blackbelt tests. Check out some of the A.K.E.A. history in pictures and video.
Thank you to the Allen/Do family, Mrs. Barnette, the Brengle family, Mr. Harmaning, the Moore family, the Mugford family, the Peterson family, and the Tipton family for making Team A.K.E.A.'s project a success. As they say, "many hands make light work". We were able to spread wood chips along both paths in the Community Garden so quickly, that we were able to beat the rain.

The basis of the material taught here is traditional martial arts, but the material itself is tweaked to make it more effective at modern self-defense. Which is, at its core, what they teach here: practical self-defense and physical conditioning for all ages and genders, along with de-escalation and fight avoidance.
I started going to this school when I was 7, when I lived 15 mins away. I am still studying here, 23 years later, with a 50 minute drive from north of Seattle. It is *that* worth it.

Outstanding school! Quality instruction, quality material, and a quality interest in you as the student. There is an excellent balance of traditional styles and teaching with modern practices in applying techniques and principles for practical self defense. There is no better place to attend; only different. Often imitated, never duplicated.

I currently train here, and this is the best place I've trained at. The instructors are always willing to help, and fellow students are as well, because no one is in competition with each other. A friendly rivalry maybe, but no one ever seeks to sabotage another so that they get ahead.
In fact, anything of that nature will get you behind. And literally kicked out.

This school is the best out there. They give individual one on one lessons in addition to group lessons and this is where I noticed the most growth in myself. After getting some details and working with you closely for a couple appointments they match you up to an instructor based on your individual needs. The instructors are amazing! They are just like family! The instructors put their hearts into making you successful. Its affordable and they even offer a family package. It felt good developing stamina, strength and skill. I especially loved feeling confident that I could use self defense techniques
