While we were officially founded in the spring of 2017, Derek's background in construction and home repair began much earlier, about the same time our relationship started. To help pay his way through college and for date nights with Megan, Derek began working for a local contractor building homes from the ground up.
He quickly picked up small side jobs as well, learning all he could. Following college graduation, we made several moves across the state of Missouri working our way up corporate ladders and putting our degrees to use. But it wasn't long before Derek found his way back into the world of home construction by becoming a certified home inspector.

Located just minutes from Des Moines, Iowa, in the beautiful little town of Adel, Derek and Megan Garrett started Heartland Handcrafted with one goal - help others personalize and love their home as much as we do ours. All services include a FREE consultation and project estimate. Prices quoted in estimates are calculated based on our experience and standards used in the industry, but are not a guarantee of project price. Many times, it is difficult to estimate an exact project cost based on a simple visual inspection.
Don't pay top dollar for a machine-made item that arrives to your home in pieces and doesn't quite fit your needs. If you can dream it, we can build it. Creating one-of-a-kind items that will last for generations is truly our passion. It started out of necessity to create small pieces for our own home and grew into furniture for an entire room - our daughter's nursery to be exact.

We recently purchased a dog kennel/side table from Heartland Handcrafted! We couldn't be more pleased with the outcome! Our pup has his own safe place in our public domain without the ugly kennel eyesore!
I worked directly with Megan on our vision and what we wanted. She was open to any and all ideas I had. She also provided great input on things I never thought of.
Derek took our plan and put it to work! He put together the perfect piece for our living room!

I purchased the folding bench set that converts to a picnic table. The craftsmanship on this is wonderful - looks great, is sturdy and very functional.
