Aikido RVA
Morihei Ueshiba, who is referred to even by those who do not study aikido as O'Sensei, which means "Great Teacher." O'Sensei studied many martial arts in his youth, including sumo wrestling, spear and bayonet arts, a wooden staff, sword arts, and the ancient grappling art of ju-jitsu. The class structure at Aikido RVA is quite simple, everyone practices in the open class format regardless of one's rank.

This is the most effective way to learn because students will have an opportunity to practice with various skill levels. It is very easy to join Aikido RVA. All you have to do is stop by and fill out a few forms, pay fees, and get on the mat. If you are not sure that Aikido is the form of self defense you wish to study, then feel free to stop by and take a trial class.

Aikido is a Japanese martial art founded in the late 1930s by Morihei Ueshiba, who is referred to even by those who do not study aikido as O'Sensei, which means "Great Teacher." O'Sensei studied many martial arts in his youth, including sumo wrestling, spear and bayonet arts, arts using a wooden staff, sword arts, and the ancient grappling art of ju-jitsu.
The class structure at Aikido RVA is quite simple, everyone practices in the open and unified class format. There is no beginner or advanced classes. We do not practice Aikido self defense techniques according to one's rank or physical skill. We feel that this is the most effective to learn because each class, students will have an opportunity to practice with various skill levels.
As an affiliated dojo of Wadokai Aikido, we train the style of Aikido known as Suenaka-Ha Tetsugaku Ho Aikido. This style of Aikido is a synthesis between physical and spiritual forms of Aikido. In the months before his death, the founder of Aikido Morehei Ueshiba O'Sensei spoke these last words to Wadokai Aikido founder Roy Y. Suenaka Sensei: "Never stray from the Path of Aiki."
Being such a tall person, his height is an advantage to his teaching, as he can offer different ways of performing techniques so that they are equally effective for multiple size attackers. One of his favorite things about aikido is watching the amazing transformation of the students as they study the art.
The study of the martial arts begins and end with etiquette, and this particularly true at Aikido RVA. We practice many ancient methods of Japanese martial courtesy as a sign of respect to Suenaka Sensei and his teachers, and to ourselves. Class Rules and Regulations. Pay your dues when due which is the last Sunday of the prior month.

Really great teaching, the instructors and Shehan Jerome live the Aikido philosophy. I had the opportunity to apply this philosophy to a situation in my life. Very best outcome. I recommend everyone learn this art. " Best described, by me as, "the art of the peaceful warrior." THe students are all about learning from each other. Very open and meaningful relationships.
