D. in clinical psychology who is devoted to helping people improve the quality of their lives. I work with adults and adolescents in individual or group therapy on issues including sleep disorders (e.g., insomnia), anxiety (e.g., generalized anxiety, social anxiety, panic, obsessive-compulsive disorder), depression, relationship issues, stress, trauma, or anything that keeps you from enjoying a happy, productive, and fulfilling life.
Millions of Americans suffer from a sleep disorder that disrupts their lives. Insomnia is the most common diagnosis. Poor sleep undermines our our mood, productivity, creativity, memory, and health. Most people don't know that there are treatments that can help get your sleep back on track and get you feeling like yourself again.
Anxiety has many different faces, but it has a similar result: keeping us from leading the type of life we want. We all experience fears and worries, but for some people they can be overwhelming and debilitating. One common coping strategy is avoidance. It makes a lot of sense to avoid the things that cause unpleasant feelings.
Dr. McGowan has given talks around the country on the effects of poor sleep and how to improve sleep. She has been asked to speak and present at multiple conferences about her research on the relationship between sleep and worry. She has also trained health care providers in behavioral sleep medicine.
