American Karate is an eclectic martial art based on traditional Isshinryu Karate and American kickboxing. Excellent for self-defense and exercise. Our Youth Martial Arts program fosters respect, cooperation and communication. Our classes are highly supervised and structured, yet encourage personal expression and creativity.
In a relaxed, focused and highly supervised environment, children are challenged by the physical and mental self-discipline found in martial arts practice. Our teaching stresses respect for ourselves and others, nonviolence, compassion, and tolerance. Our classes explore practical methods for resolving conflicts nonviolently.
The American Karate-Do System (AKS) blends two major components, the traditional and the modern. The emphasis in traditional Karate-do is to teach proper body mechanics for power and balance, to condition the body for health and resilience, and to provide an effective platform of techniques for street confrontations.
Modern Arnis is a practical form of Filipino Martial Art developed by the late Grandmaster Remy A. Presas. The art is excels in real life self-defense, and is both fun to practice and easy to learn (though, like all true martial arts, it takes years to master). Modern Arnis blends the best elements of Filipino Jujitsu, Karate, and stick & knife fighting into a brilliantly conceived, versatile and effective martial art.

I have taken classes at J.R.Roy Martial Arts Studio for 13 years. Master Roy, Sensei Chaisson and the rest of the staff had a major positive influence on me growing up and becoming an adult. Now I teach classes alongside them whenever I’m available. The JRRMAS system fosters self-discipline, healthy habits, and spiritual growth. No matter what your interests and goals are, the principles of JRRMAS’s teachings apply and give you the right attitude for success. I would definitely recommend anyone interested in martial arts to stop by and see for themselves.

In my 25 years of martial arts with such greats as Hall of Famer Larry Kelley and Jae Hun Kim (#1 student of the founder of modern Tae Kwon Do), I learned a ton, but at J.R. Roy’s I discovered that I had practiced mostly sport, not art. I’ve been awakened to the power in the art of techniques, and I’ve learned many great new techniques too. The Greenfield, Franklin County, and Western Massachusetts area are lucky to have such good martial arts classes available.
