Diabetic eye disease is a leading cause of blindness in the United States and is caused by changes in the retina's blood vessels. Blood vessels can swell and leak fluid, and may progress to complete blockage. New blood vessels can then grow on the retinal surface which are prone to bleeding. This is called Proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy.
Age-related macular degeneration is a painless eye disease that gradually destroys sharp, clear, central vision, typically in adult patients over the age of 50 years. It is the leading cause of loss of vision in this age group. Macula is the part of the eye that allows you to have central vision which gives the ability to read and see fine detail.
Retinal tear is the most common cause of retinal detachment. Other torn retina causes are raction from diabetes and spontaneous leakage behind retina. Retinal tear occurs due to traction on the retina due to a vitreous gel that has become liquefied and mobile in some regions and still a membrane or strand like material adherent to the periphery.
Glaucoma is actually a group of eye conditions that cause damage to your optic nerve, mostly due to unusually high pressure in your eyes. It is also one of the leading causes of blindness for adults aged 60 and older, though it can occur at any age, often without warning signs or symptoms.
Glaucoma's effect on your vision is so gradual that you likely won't notice any vision changes until it reaches an advanced stage, when vision loss cannot be recovered.Glaucoma is one of many reasons to have your eyes checked regularly. If diagnosed at an early stage, it can be treated, and resulting vision loss can be slowed or even prevented.
