For decades quarter horses, cattle and cowboys roamed the grassy hills of the historic Kentucky Ranch. Today we are full of casual charm, reminiscent of California past and present. Since 2004 Thacher Winery with the grasshopper label, has been handcrafting wines from superb vineyards located throughout California's Central Coast.
Our boutique production demonstrates local subtleties and true local terroir. The award-winning winery and tasting room are situated next to a 100-year-old KR barn with spectacular and ever-changing vistas of vineyards, hayfields, and oak trees. Services
Both of us were working at a brewery in 1992. It's the same old story: bartender meets waitress, they fall in love, marry, and start a winery. Sherman started as a brewer and became an award winning brewmaster. He held that responsibility for 16 years. Michelle left the bay area to complete her degree at UCSB.
The "KR" on our barn is a well-known landmark of old time Paso Robles. The Kentucky Ranch- our home, winery, vineyard and gardens was part of a 4,000 acre Spanish Land Grant until 1869 after which it became a thriving horse breeding operation. Our ranch includes the 1920's KR barn, outbuildings, our home, barley fields and riparian habitat for deer, coyotes, bobcats, turkeys and the occasional mountain lion.
We are a family owned and operated, authentic wine producer located in one of the most superb wine growing regions of the world, and fueled by some of the most talented people. We believe in this place that we call home, and the handmade wines that we have to share with you. We have come from other places and have varied backgrounds, and we are grateful to share this lovely part of California with those that are also drawn to Paso Robles.

Sherman is an outstanding wine maker. His wines are out absolute favorite. We have been members of Thacher for years and always look forward to our visits so we can take in the breathtaking grounds, delicious wines from top to bottom, and socialize with the wonderful staff. Overall, I would give Thacher Winery the highest review possible, if there were more than 5 stars I would give them more without a doubt.

Excellent winery! Their wines are quite sophisticated with no harshness but lots of interesting flavors and long flavor curves.
Chris, our wine server at the tasting, was very knowledgeable and enjoyable. We learned a bunch and really enjoyed ourselves despite doing the tasting outside during a downpour! Chris made us quite cozy

This is exactly the kind of intimate winery that we were hoping we would find in Paso Robles wine country! Relaxed and friendly yet super professional hosts + small production well crafted wines. We enjoyed everything we tasted --- nice variety and so full of personality there is something to fit every mood. I took the longest time deciding what to bring home because there was something special to appreciate in each bottle. I am a driver for Lush Limo here in Paso and have the opportunity to visit many wineries. Thatcher never fails. My daughter and her friend had never been wine tasting. We spent the weekend in Paso and our tasting at Thacher was definitely one of the highlights of the weekend! We were greeted by smiling faces and a friendly winery dog; and our Tasting Room Associate, Chris, was very knowledgeable and friendly and conducted an excellent tasting. We topped off our visit with a delicious bottle of Chenin Blanc and the picnic we brought. Overall an amazing experience. Thank you to Chris, Anna, and the rest of the team for your hospitality!

We visited Thacher for the first time over the weekend. It was a little further out than we anticipated, but worth the little drive! The location is breathtaking - beautiful rolling hills and a peaceful setting.
The wines were lovely, and our server was kind and shared lots of knowledge about the wines. Their pricing is very fair ($20 per tasting) and their pours were lovely. We love to come back on our next trip!
