The Santa Ynez Valley is quite a large California viticultural area located about 2 1/2 hours north of Los Angeles and about 4 1/2 hours south of San Francisco. This unique transverse valley, with an east-west orientation, offers very different grape growing environments at each terminus. For every mile travelled from west to east, temperatures increase about one degree.
Our winery is called Fiddlehead, so why not have a little fun and call our vineyard Fiddlestix?! Fiddlestix is the quintessential Pinot noir dream vineyard, located at the western end of the transverse-oriented Santa Ynez Valley, AVA. In 1996, Kathy took a leap of faith and purchased what was a 133 acre "flower farm" Sta.
We love customer feedback. Our greatest joy is when you share your appreciation of our efforts. So don't be afraid; go on ahead and give us a ring, drop us an email line, stop by our Tasting Room to say hello, follow us on Facebook and Twitter and stay connected through our monthly email newsletter!
Are you having a horrible week? Has it been stressful the past few hours? Is your day dragging? Well not to worry, Fiddlehead Cellars is here for you. Kathy has started a series of "not-too-serious" videos to talk about wine and common questions about how to enjoy it. For best results, enjoy it with a glass of your favorite Fiddlehead wine.
In the early years Kathy frequently submitted her wines for review. It was a necessity as a new kid on the block, but it was disheartening to see the inconsistency of reviews of the same wine - rave commentary by one and mediocre reception by another. After judging years of wine competitions, Kathy knows first hand that "blind" tastings are a matter of interpretation and there is an amazing amount of bargaining that drives awards.

Fiddlehead Winery part of the Wine Ghetto in the Sobhani Industrial Park. Look to the back side of Fiddlehead to find an outdoor patio with tables physically distanced and wearing masks until reaching your table routine.
What is so impressive and amazing is owner Katy Joseph who is so vibrant and welcoming at an age most of us would just be happy chilling out. For her, wine and wine making must be her fountain of youth. Still rather rare to find a woman as the head of a winery. Congratulations on being one of the earlier female pioneers in the oenological world.

My last (pre-Pandemic) tasting at Fiddlehead stands out in my memory; it was a decidedly different experience than is usual outside of Lompoc's "Wine Ghetto".
When I say different, I mean that in a very good way; the tasting room is situated inside a small room with just enough space for a small table and several chairs. Despite (or maybe because) of this minimalistic space, the tasting experience is one of the most relaxed and enjoyable I've had in Lompoc.
Our Sommelier unhurriedly guided us through a tasting of half a dozen different Fiddlehead wines. They were all good

I've been wine tasting at Fiddlehead twice, once prepandemic and once during the pandemic. And to be honest I enjoyed the pandemic tasting a lot more because it was outside, relaxing, there was music, and we were served by the winemaker herself.
Our tables were socially distanced and we enjoyed a tasting of six different wines. Winemaker Kathy Joseph explained how her wines were made, as well as the history of her vineyard. She shared a little of the harvest process and her experience as a woman winemaker in a male-dominated field.
The tasting was $17, which I found to be very reasonable

We had a great first visit at this tasting room a few weeks ago. Rachel was personable and really engaged - clearly loves the winemaker, the product and was fun to spend time with her chatting about the area and wine. Each of us had a favorite and it met the needs of both red only and need to replenish White and Rose from summer.

I goofed up and didn't confirm my appt, but Stephen the associate winemaker was gracious enough to host us. With a cozy tasting space in the Lompoc "Wine Ghetto", we went through a nice range of wines. Their take on Sauvignon Blanc is unique and worth a try and the Pinot Noir wines are all top notch. They also do some lesser known varietals worth a try if available. Make (and confirm) an appointment and go see them. Great wines and great location for a day of wine tasting.

Fiddlehead Cellars is a small winery in the heart of the Lompoc Wine Ghetto. The little tasting room cannot handle many people at all - it was definitely the smallest room and would be jammed with 10 people. But our party of 4 was solo most of the time and had a great tour of many of their wines with Suzy.
Suzy was very knowledgeable about Kathy's wine making method and thoughts on the wine. She also had her own thoughts on the wine. We especially loved the Missing 7 Pinot Noir and the Rose of Pinot Noir. We liked the Rose so much that we brought our lunch in and enjoyed a bottle. I wouldn

Everything about the Fiddlehead tasting room is fine. The wine is exceptional, the soms are very friendly and generous with pours, and the atmosphere is just what you'd expect, except that it's not. It's just the "wine ghetto" location that takes away from the whole winery experience. Instead of driving a distance past a billion grapes, taking in the scenery and the smells, red hawks flying above, you get an industrial roll-up garage door strip of stores behind a Home Depot. All concrete and asphalt. This location just causes it to lose so much, although if one is pressed

My ABSOLUTE FAVORITE!! Never cared much for pinot until Fiddlehead....now I'm in love. In addition to all of the varieties that keep me coming back, they have the most knowledgeable and friendly, down to earth staff EVER ....yes Sadie is a favorite but they all are wonderful and Bill J (My puppy) can't wait to see everyone. I recommend Friday Night Group Therapy...β€π·πΎπ·β€

It's been too many years since I've been back to fiddlehead! Today I had a group tasting tour and this was our 1st stop. What an incredible time we had, I apologize to everyone who else who happen to be there with us. Yes, it was all about Choice Travel Adventures today...
Come tour with us and it can be all about you too!

I really want to give this place a 3.5 but Lindsay was cool so I rounded to 4 instead of 3. The temperature of the whites was off which was kind of off putting. They definitely need to be chilled. They had a 50% off deal for a case of Rose so we bought one but couldn't try it so fingers crossed that it's good.
The tasting menu (the regular one) doesn't really do justice to the array of wines that they have. I suggest upgrading to taste the Oregon wines. It would be awesome if the expanded the tasting list to 6 wines so the customer can get a better understanding of depth of the

Fun place for a tasting in the Lompoc wine ghetto. The wines are well made and tasty. The tasting room is small and has an intimate feel. We were warmly hosted and enjoyed a generous tasting. The fee is $15 per person and it is easy to share a tasting as the pours are big enough for two. Worth the visit.

This tasting room allows you to sit but is a tight space. Very educated person running the tasting and willing to share her expertise. This is some serious wine at some higher prices, but these guys are experts at the chemistry of wine, so prices are probably accurate. Big flavors are your playground here.

Kathy Joesph is old school, as in, don't wait for something to be done for her, make it happen. She found the St. Rita valley. Saw the potential, started making great wines there and turned it into a AVR. Her wines are wonderful. This Sideways (featured Sauv Blanc) and her fab Fiddle Pink Rose and her 728 Pinot. Fantastic. We're fans. We always have a few bottles around and are never shy to whip out with friends.
Go up and take a tour. The are open on weekends but do appointments during the week. So worth it.

Just like the other reviewers say. Fiddlehead is a Gem of the industry.
Just another Woman Wine maker! Yeah! I will say it again they rule the wine world.. Kathy Joseph has a knack for getting beautiful aromas from her vineyard. All of her wines show the characteristic that are so famous from the Santa Rite Appellations. I was most impressed though with her Willamette Valley Pinot. It was tasting very good that day. Beautiful forest floor, Bing cherry, coca cola aromas. Very silky on the pallet with a nice lingering
