Services
Kang Do Won Martial Arts Institute began in 1984 and has been at its current location in Wickliffe, Ohio, since 1985, serving adults and kids. Kang Do Won is Korean and, when translated, means "School of Inner Strength." Our educational focus is always on positive personal growth, healthy character development, and behavioral modification, which is ultimately how the true quality and inner strength of all human beings is nurtured.
The martial art, "Kang Do, " as taught at the Kang Do Won transforms average people into extraordinary individuals. This transformation occurs because of the educational focus we put on positive personal growth, healthy character development, and behavioral modification. Grand Master Lewis is one of the few masters who has written and published an educational text for his students.
At the age of 11, Master Hotchkiss earned his 1st degree black belt in 1994. At this point he was one of the youngest black belts ever at the Kang Do Won. In 1994, he was awarded 'Student of the Year' and on several occasions been awarded 'Instructor of the Year' by Grand Master Richard J. Lewis. Master Hotchkiss has frequently earned 'American Warrior Competitor of the Year' awards in the American Warrior Martial Arts Tournament.
Kang Do Won Martial Arts Institute was founded by Grand Master Richard J. Lewis, who is one of a minority of American martial artists to merit certification as an International Master Black Belt from the Kuk Ki Won, located in Seoul, Korea. In 2015, Grand Master Lewis transferred ownership and sole educational responsibility and authority to his son, Senior Master Gary M. Hotchkiss, 7th Degree Black Belt.
Why should I consider martial arts training for my child, rather than a sport like baseball or gymnastics? Participation in sports is great for children, but those who have little or no athletic aptitude usually find themselves sitting on the bench and watching the more athletically gifted kids play the game.

I personally have been involved with the school since 1992. Now with my children being involved in the educational programs it makes them the 3rd generation to attend. I could not think of a better place to help them build a foundation for the rest of their lives.

This place is life changing. I was a student for 5 years from 2001 until 2006. Grand Master Lewis and his family is amazing, supportive, and well educated. Grand Master Lewis is now retired however, his son is now teaching the school. I will never forgot everything I have learned and still apply my knowledge and training to everyday life. Memories for life.

Would give more stars if I could. All of the instructors are great. As an original student of Grand Master Lewis I would like to take the time to simply say thank you. Words couldn't express the gratitude I have for this school and the people here. The lessons you will learn make you the best person you can be. Yours sincerely Tommy "thumb" and Teri @The Beauty Bar.
