During the early Twenties, M.B. Smemoe, distressed about the rising costs of funerals in many place, made plans to alleviate the burdens of the bereaved. In 1924, he began to make definite plans for organizing the Minnehaha County Burial Association with family memberships that would entitle those families to reduced expenses for funerals.
After making trips to the state capitol in Pierre, he learned that they could secure a charter for such an organization. Mr. Smemoe, with the help of Colton mortician E.A. Berven, canvassed the county to obtain family memberships at $10.00 per share. The significant purpose of the Minnehaha County Burial Association was to provide efficient and dignified funeral services at reasonable prices.

Our Baltic Chapel was constructed in 1902 from beautiful native rose quartzite stone. It was turned into a funeral home in 1929, and has undergone several renovations since then. It features a large chapel/visitation room, arrangement office, casket display room, food service area, preparation room, and is completely handicap accessible.
Since 2013, Minnehaha Funeral Home, of Baltic, Colton, Dell Rapids, and Garretson, South Dakota, has awarded a $500 scholarship to one graduating high school senior from each of the high schools in our area (Baltic High School, Chester Area High School, Dell Rapids High School, Dell Rapids St. Mary High School, Garretson High School, and Tri-Valley High School).
Most of us plan ahead in life. We plan for our wedding, our children's education, family vacations, and other significant expected life events. We also plan for the unexpected events of life by purchasing home, auto and medical insurance. Understanding the benefits of pre-planning has prompted many to take the step to plan their own arrangements.

Very compassionate and thoughtful director. Made sure everything was taken care of including things we never would have thought to do. Very good online presence with photo and video tribute software that was easy to use.
All aspects of the funeral were well planned and was a good tribute to our Dad.
